Hey, I'm Dahlia. And I'm Alma. Welcome to the Gory Details podcast, where we discuss horror from every angle. We break it down with humor, sarcasm, and curiosity, looking at what scares and excites us most, what gets ignored, and the people shaping the genre right now. Alma, you reminded me of something. So we had decided that September, your face. September is uh possession month for us. And I thought we were done. I was like, oh, we're done. And you're like, no, we've got another day in September that we need to discuss, or another week in September we need to discuss possession movies. And so we're in for a treat. Well, you all knew how many days in the month there were. I didn't. So this month, I mean, this week we're discussing the cleansing hour. So I had actually watched a little bit of this uh before, not the whole movie. I know now why I had only partially watched it, but we'll get into it. So I had already watched this movie, part of it. Um gosh, I don't know when it was. Uh I forgot to look at my history, but it's on Shudder, and I go to press play to watch the movie, and I'm like, wait a minute. Look at that. I've already started watching this movie. Had you watched it before?
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, I've seen it, but only one time. I remember watching it one time, probably when it first came out.
SPEAKER_00Well, you know me and watching movies. So I am notorious for watching a movie and then like literally forgetting all about it for certain reasons. My brain is mush. It can only hold so much information. But also, I think in this case, it's movies that I don't necessarily enjoy. A little spoiler alert there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Spoiler alert. Okay, good. Because I was already gonna ask you if you liked it because I could tell by your face you probably didn't.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but I would have thought that I would have remembered more of this movie just because of the the things that I do like in it. There are things that I like in this movie, so it's not like I'm gonna go into a shit fest like I have in the past with different movies. I can't remember when the movies off the top of my head, but man, I really have a way of starting out like I'm not gonna talk shit about this movie, and then that's all I do. That's all I end up fucking doing. Because I try to be nice. I try to be nice when I watch a movie. There's always something that I enjoy about a movie. Well, almost always. And so I will talk about those things that I enjoy over the things that I don't enjoy. This movie has a lot of things, uh elements in it that I actually think it did well. And the more we get into it, you'll find out where it is that I feel that this movie kind of took a turn for me. So the cleansing hour, oh, I already forgot what year. It's 73% on Rotten Tomatoes. So it's it's better than I thought it was gonna be when I looked it up on Rotten Tomatoes. There's 73%, that's critic rating. 62% for the general audience. Okay. What do you think about that?
SPEAKER_01Well, I think it's higher than I expected. I just always think that movies with possession exorcisms and stuff like that aren't gonna do too well. Um, but that is a little surprising to me to see that. A little higher than I thought.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, me too. Um but I guess it just goes to say that it that people are probably the same as me. There's some things that they like about it, and that's where I think people are kind of like holding on to it. But 73% for critics, that's the one that really, really surprised me. I could see general audiences forgiving more. You know what I mean? Like, if I'm watching a movie, I I tend to forgive a lot, but when I see when I read critic ratings, they're a little bit harsher. And this one seemed to do pretty good, I think. Another successful exorcism streamed online, or so it seems. Can the exorcist producer and their team bring the ratings up? Ratings skyrocket when a real demon gets involved. That's what IMDB says this movie is about. All right, Alma, why don't you tell us who wrote, directed it, who's in it, all that good stuff.
SPEAKER_01This was co-written by Damien Levec and Aaron Horwitz, and also directed by Damien Levesque. Um, it stars Ryan Guzman as Max, Kyle Gallner as Drew, and Alexis Angelis as Lane.
SPEAKER_00Uh for uh Possession movies, it's the final possession movie of this month. We talked about Talk to Me, The Conjuring, The Devil Made Me Do It, When Evil Lurks, and now we're talking about the cleansing hour. My initial reaction, fun premise. It's a really fun premise premise. We're live streaming, yeah, we're live streaming exorcisms. Yeah, they're fake, but you know, it's it's fun. They're they're putting on a production. They're they're it's fake. People believe it's real. It's kind of like one of those things. It's always going to be like that. Um, they are presenting it as real, so they're not presenting it as fake. They have they're going all out, they're selling their merch online. We have a fake priest, we have the people that are getting exercised, like I said, fun premise. It's just kind of poking fun at the things that uh what do you call them? Um influencers. Why can't I think of the name? There you go. Okay, influences.
SPEAKER_01I was wondering what word you're looking for. I could have figured it out either. Sorry.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. No, it's fine. It's fine. I was like, I I know this word. Why can't I think of it? It's poking fun of how influencers do these things. They're selling uh religious, official religious Vatican garb during it. They're pushing all these things so that basically this is how they make the money, selling their merch, selling uh the things online during during the exorcisms. It's kind of it's kind of funny. Um so it had some it had some great ideas. I really went into this starting to think that I was gonna like the movie. I'm like, oh, this is fun, yeah. Because of those elements, I like it's not found footage, but it kind of has a feel of that of found footage. One of my favorite genres in horror. Well, in in general, I don't know, yeah, in general, I don't know what else has found footage. Is there other genres that have found footage? I I think because I only watch horror for the most part, that I think that horror is the only uh genre that has found footage. I'm sure there's found footage in other uh genres, but during this live streamed exorcism show, we have Drew and Max who are our purveyors of this type of entertainment for the masses. Max is our fake priest. Drew is his best friend, slash producer, slash director, slash everything.
SPEAKER_01Everything, everything, he does everything. Max is pretty much just the face of it. He just shows up and um just does his action.
SPEAKER_00And that's the personality, yeah, he's the personality of it all. Like I said, the fake priest. The audience believes they're watching legitimate, well, yeah. They believe they're watching legitimate exorcism. So it's like an actual little mini horror movie that they're putting on. It's an hour-long stream, and it's audience it has audience participation, so it's fun. This movie has is about, oh god, I already forgot how long it was, but it was a little too long for my taste. I think this movie would have done better if it had been shorter, I think.
SPEAKER_01It was 94 minutes.
SPEAKER_00Oh shit. That's not even that long. It felt like a lot longer than that. It really did feel like it was a lot longer than that.
SPEAKER_01Dahlia is is is going on about her dis dislike, and I thought I'd bring in the fact that I didn't dislike it. Um not dislike. I'm pretty much more neutral about it. So that's a different opinion, I guess. I'm more neutral, definitely, about the the film itself. I didn't think it was the the greatest. I didn't think it was exciting or anything like that, but I definitely found parts of it to enjoy and was more overall just left kind of feeling in a neutral way. Um I like that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I'd just neutral.
SPEAKER_00I don't know how to describe it. No, I like that because the reason I think I'm shitting on it right out the gate is because I feel like this movie had promise. I was I was excited for a live stream exorcism movie. Uh it just I there's just movies that I enjoy basic ideas, basic premises of them. And when it doesn't when it's not done, I think the way I feel like the story is leading me on, I get really pissed off at how at the execution I think is what I'm trying to get at. Yeah, that's really what I'm get trying to get at. That the Yeah, I feel like I'm just shitting on this movie.
SPEAKER_01Well, you know, you can. You if you didn't like it, you didn't like it. I just I just feel more like I didn't ha care enough in the parts that I didn't like to dis overall dislike it. Um first of all, it it starts off with one scene where they show you how they get everything done. They show you how um they put on this this cleansing hour, and it's it's a pretty great production that they put on here. Um a young man is being exercised, his family's watching, um they're uh doing their exorcism part, and the his producer, Drew, is the one, you know, feeding him lines, feeding him um, and then they've got a good production crew who's you know setting up things to make it look like like the the holy water is burning, the the candles are burning higher, they're uh they're making everything look so great. And then we have um you can tell that there's tension because Drew is trying to get um Max to listen to him about hey, this is what we need to do to draw more numbers, and Max is more all about doing what he wants to do, um, make it happen. And then we end up with this one night when they were supposed to have another guest, a um uh drag queen, but she didn't show up, and something had stopped her from showing up in the the shadows before she gets there. And then we have this night when the girlfriend of Drew um takes over. She's an actress, and she steps in thanks to um thanks to Drew, and Lane sits in the chair and she's ready to get ex uh exercised. And then that's how we end up with this evil night where everything starts going wrong immediately because somebody's mad at Max for his fake cleansing hours, and it's a demon, and that's what we have that we're looking at now. So we have one hour of I wonder if they did film it for like an hour.
SPEAKER_00Like I tried to pay attention to that, like because it made a point of constantly showing us the time once that hour started. We kept looking at the time, they kept showing the time. See, that's probably why I thought it was longer, because they can't they made a point of constantly showing the time to us. They did, yeah, they did. Yeah. So it's very possible that it, you know, I guess that by the end of it though, I didn't really care enough to have to find out if it was actually an hour at that point. I think you thank you for setting it up for us. Yes. Going into it, we all come back down to the girlfriend of the oh my god, I just said everybody's name. Drew. Drew's girlfriend. Thank you. Drew's girlfriend is conveniently an actress that was able to step into the role of the person who's going to be exercised. She gets all strapped into the chair, and then the real possession begins. Max is all about okay, first of all. Sorry. I just I just kind of annoyed at the fact that he I know he's not a real priest, duh, as the audience. But is he supposed to be like, are people supposed to believe as he that he's an actual priest? Because he's over here all he's yes, he's a whore. He's a whore. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but he's a priest. You can be a whore all you want, be safe, consenting adults, all that good stuff stuff. But he's supposed to be a priest, and he's going around here fucking everybody and their grandmother.
SPEAKER_01And I don't believe he is. People do believe he is. People believe this is the real thing. This is uh they have well, they have reason to believe it isn't, obviously, because it's not real, but they do believe that he is a real priest. I mean, he met those two girls, they're completely enamored by him. He's got fans, they tune in every week to watch his show. Um, he presents.
SPEAKER_00Everything he does is for himself.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00That's I think that's just it. From the very beginning, they start showing us that it's all about him. It's like he's which again, there's nothing wrong with it except the fact that it just annoyed me that people were actually believing that he was a priest. Again, suspend disbelief and all that good stuff. It just annoyed the fuck out of me. Because right off the bat, I'm like, okay, I kind I kind of have an idea of what's you start getting an idea of what's gonna happen. You start seeing the the little twists and turns that are starting to happen throughout the movie. Sure, that's fun. You know, a lot of movies, you see what's happening. Uh you can kind of guess what's gonna happen. Not a big deal because it's still fun. It's like when you see the demon wanting to get confessions out of him. Yeah, that's to be expected. He's kind of a guy that, you know, has a past or has secrets and all that. Get him to admit it on live stream so that people know that he's a fake. Cool. That's a nice little premise there. Let's have fun with that. It just was I did I don't know. It just started becoming to be too much for the plot, I think. We have let's get into real quick, uh, because I'm gonna go down the things we had, like I said, the secrets that Max was holding on to that he had to confess on the you know, on live stream. We had a romance going on, uh Drew and his girlfriend, who was the person who was being possessed. So we got that going on. We have the fake possession, we got the real possession. We've got a background of Drew and Max, where did they kill someone? I'm still confused about that part.
SPEAKER_01They're they grew up together. I don't know if if he killed the the school lady that they went to Catholic school with together or not. I think either she lost an eye or she could have died. Either way, it was something that was pretty huge that happened to Max. Um, but we don't know either one what happened.
SPEAKER_00Right. We had uh a betrayal going on because we have two people who are having uh well, no, they didn't they didn't have an affair, they had a relationship prior to everybody knowing each other, and for some reason that created drama. So it just it just had a lot going on at different parts of the movie where I feel like okay, you could have ended the movie at this point, that could have been done, or that the movie didn't need this part. Like, for example, the part with uh the uh the nun or the teacher that was disciplining Max and Drew when they were little. They were trying to give us some backstory as far as I think their religious upbringing, but then they had that weird scene, like I said, where I have no idea if they even killed her. It's like why I'm not quite sure why that was necessary because that confession led to nothing. If it there wasn't even if there even was a confession, and they had the nun appear for like a second for like like literally like not even a minute to scare him.
SPEAKER_01It's interesting you keep bringing up that you know they could have just ended it here or they ended it there because it was this was a quite successful uh short. Yes. As a short. And so it probably did a much better job wrapping it up in the short than in this um movie format that went on too long and several points where I was like, I even I even thought it'd be a much better ending if they had cut out um coming back to the studio and showing everybody's being taken care of by like that wasn't necessary, him and the Lane getting back together at the end of it. Uh, I thought, yeah, we could have just cut to the end and shown cutscenes where the rest of the civilization is falling victim to these possessed people who watched the cleansing hour. And that would have been a more quick and exciting ending.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because the ending, like I I'm mentioning all these things because it just seemed like things kept getting stacked onto each other. Like, hey, let's have these two best friends that grew up together, and this is how they got into the exorcism game. Okay, all right, all right, now these two people are dating and they love each other, and this is gonna come into play somehow. Okay, all right. Oh, now we have fucking Drew over here who's skimming off the prophets. See, I'm telling you, there's a whole bunch going on over here. Drew, like we mentioned, is the everything of the show. We have Max, who's the personality, who's the fake priest, who's just all about himself. And Sure, that's a lot when you're the personality personality of a show. When you're the main uh the main star, yeah, I'm not saying that you aren't doing a lot, but Drew behind the scenes is doing everything. He's getting the talent, he's creating the effects, he's uh he's pushing the live stream during it. He does everything before, after, during. He's just doing a lot of shit. So he starts to essentially steal from their production because he's like, hey, I'm doing all the work. I'm gonna make sure that I am being compensated for all of this hard work that I'm doing. So he says that he's taking like, I may be making this number up, but I think he said he's taking like 70% of the profit. Yeah. Yeah. 70% of the profit. And so you got that going on, and then you end up finding out that Max is who's the fake priest, actually had a relationship with Drew's girlfriend before Drew met her. So you would think it'd be a non-issue, right? But they kept it a secret because they were like, uh, this was in our past. Max was a jerk to her, so they just didn't really want to bring it up because it was like, yeah, it's it's a non-issue now. But fucking Drew ends up getting pissed off at this, and then they get to a point where Drew tries to kill Max. Are we Oh yes, yeah, that happened too. Yes, that happened. Drew gets so pissed off at Max, he starts beating the shit out of him and he starts choking him. He fucking starts choking him. So I'm sitting there like, okay, I there's just so much going on right here. So I I didn't believe that. I didn't believe that Drew would have reacted like that. So that's another element that just kind of got annoying. Ugh, sorry. It was just exhausting seeing everything they kept adding.
SPEAKER_01The I they only I only mentioned three characters because those are the three main characters. There's there's other people on the set, and they're only there so that they can die during the movie, so I really didn't bring them up. But um that was also obvious that they were just going to be killing off those other people and leaving the three because it make it made no sense to not kill them at any point because the demon controlling the girl from the chair is um all powerful and can do pretty much what they want, but yet they leave the three main characters alone and kill the three extra people that are on set that night. Um so those people are dying too, and they're just used just to show how powerful, I guess, the demon is. And so they're there the demon is kind of dragging things out. It is it is. I I believe maybe they they they kept it to feeling like that hour and the time showing and the fact that they would stop and try to look up who the demon was and use their their background to try to figure that out. And and at one point Max loses his fingers. Um he has to confess about that. The garb. Yeah, there's there's just uh a lot of um parts where it slows down. You would think that that would be that there would be catalysts to to get the movie going and make it seem more exciting, but instead they're the opposite. They're m they m make the movie drag. They make the movie drag instead of propelling it forward and making it seem more exciting for the viewer. That was just my opinion.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And I like your attitude that it's just like you're like, eh. And whereas I'm getting irrationally angry, I have no skin in the game whatsoever, and I'm aware just really I again because I it had a fun premise. I love movies when they have a fun premise. All right. Are there any rules to this possession? Oh. We we talk about rules of you know, possessions. Like talk to me. They had uh, if you remember, they had to set up, it was a ritual that they had to do to set up the possession. Um, they have the hand that they're gonna touch to get into it. Uh, the other movie is uh the conjuring one, where it's pretty traditional type of possession. We're talking about evil versus good. What's the other movie? We talked about when evil lurks. That one was another interesting movie because it was set in a world where this is they exist. These possessions exist. And so that was a fun spin on it. This one, excited, I was excited for because it had a live streaming element. It was very modern. Yeah, it was all stage. That's what I liked about it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's what I like about the live streaming.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That that was that was fun for me. That was like, oh, okay, cool. They're gonna get this started. But there's no background, there's no, there's no reason to believe that this is a real exorcism either, because the show just begins, and we only know from two examples, the one where we're watching and the one in the beginning, is that they just get into it. They just get into the exorcism, and then the priest, he follows his steps, he follows his book, his words, his prayers, um, based on what Drew feeds him. Yeah. But we don't have any other background or reason to um believe that this person who's on the stage is actually a possessed person. And so when things immediately go, yeah, when things immediately start going wrong, we really don't, you know, we we couldn't really tell what's fake, what's real, because they already were doing what's fake, what's real, you know?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I would have liked to have known, like the other movies, um, again, uh some kind of rules to this possession, because like what triggered the possession? What started it, other than this demon knows that they exist. Okay, give me more. Give me more of how this demon found them, give me more. Yeah, we end up finding the name of the the demon at the end of the the whole thing, but it there was no there was just But it wasn't that demon.
SPEAKER_01It wasn't it wasn't the demon. Remember, they they found out the name of the demon, but then the demon that's really there says, haha, I'm the one who made the list. That's not who I am. I'm not sure. Oh yeah, that's right.
SPEAKER_00See, so I mean the confessions. Other than the confessions being there, I guess the confessions you could say were for entertainment purposes, but for who? Because the demon was getting them to make confessions. Okay, I'll go with that. That's fun. Make them confess. Let's hear about these confessions and all that. But the confessions end up not making a difference, they play no part in what happens because at the end of the movie, what ends up happening is everybody gets possessed that was watching. They could have done that without the con without the confessions. Like the confessions played no part in the people getting possessed at the end of it all.
SPEAKER_01Those made no difference. Like what they were trying to do was get more people to watch so more people could get possessed, and you're saying that the confessions didn't help with that.
SPEAKER_00I don't think so, no, because they were watching because of the things that were going on. People didn't seem to care about the confessions. Like as you start finding out that the that Max the priest isn't really a priest, when you start finding out all these things, I didn't see any real uh you know they didn't seem to care about that. They were still there for Max and you know the the fake priest.
SPEAKER_01A lot of people kept showing up for him.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, for him. They kept wanting to watch him. They weren't like, oh, I'm pissed off that he's not really a priest, oh I'm pissed off that he dated Drew's girlfriend in the past. They didn't care, they didn't seem to react to these confessions. They just kept rooting for Max. The audience, the audience just kept rooting for Max, but why? What is what was it about him that kept kept them there, kept them watching? I I I just I didn't see it, I didn't feel that connection. Maybe I missed it when I was groaning, sitting there, like what's going on? Maybe there was a uh uh another connection that I I missed that uh made people want to hang around other than the just caring. Just feeling bad for him or whatever. Yeah, but but why? Why? I yeah again, I I think I'm I'm being way harsh on this movie because I really thought it was gonna I thought it was gonna be more fun, and it just ended up throwing a lot of slop at the you know, at the script, and then like, okay, let's see what actually sticks. And to me, nothing stuck. None of it stuck. The fun premise of it being a live stream exorcism kind of just I don't know, deflated for me. I and feel horrible because I feel like I'm a bad influence on you right now. I'm picking on all the things that I didn't like, and I'm sure you came in thinking that there were things that you liked, and I'm taking that away from you.
SPEAKER_01No, not not necessarily, just different parts that were worth noting. And so, but nothing nothing also was scary, you know. Um exorcism, I usually like to get my little goosebumps off, you know, from something showing up that is just, oh my gosh, what did they make them do? Like um the exorcism of Emily Rose when they got her to bend over all backwards and and uh That is a great vision. Yes. But with the with the exercised person, the person who was supposed to be getting exercise in this one, the only scary thing, no, that there wasn't any scary moment. Like they didn't make her do anything other than choke on that rag. And that was, you know, nothing that was giving me the the the goosebumps, you know, that I wanted that none of that was happening. There wasn't any part where the demon showed up and was scaring the garbage out of people, except for that one crew member, Chris, who um was also probably on drugs. So then it makes you doubt that he's even seen anything at all, and maybe he's just tripping. And so um you had him, that poor unfortunate guy who ends up stabbing himself to death because of the the demon that he's surrounded by a bunch of demons that nobody else sees, and nobody else is having to deal with, and nothing else is happening on the screen. So is he just seeing something that's not there?
SPEAKER_00Well, I completely forgot about him. See, yeah, there was a lot going on, this stage hand or whatever that, like you said, potentially on drugs and or also seeing the actual demon. So that could have been interesting because it could have gone in with something like, you know, he had some kind of sixth sense or something where he could see the demons in their real forms or whatever, but then you start doubting it, which is also okay. Like, oh, maybe he's just really, really blitzed out of his mind high on drugs, but it didn't really go anywhere. It just they just used him as a prop to have somebody else get killed. And sure, that's what horror movies are about. Let's have some fun killings. But then they couldn't even do that right, in my opinion, speaking of the killings and speaking of the things that were going on, because there was so much CGI. I think they could have had again, I'm a huge fan of practical effects, and this movie did not have it. There was elements where they used CGI for no fucking reason, and I was like, that could have been a great practical effect right there. And nope, it it just what they did with it just looks so fake and so phony. And I would rather a practical effect look phony and that be fun. Cause like, you know, somebody put their heart into it, somebody went for it. They using the fake blood, the plastics, and all this shit. That's fun, but no, we're gonna do this fake CGI shit that just took took me out. Well, I was already out of it, but really I couldn't even go in and say, oh yeah, that's fun. No, it was like, okay, that just looks ridiculous. And so they they couldn't even do that with for me.
SPEAKER_01So I guess what we have, we have this movie here who we had some expectations and were really just let down. Some expectations, like with my possessions, my possessions. With my possessions, I like I like to get a little a little scared. A little just uh, you know, I like to watch it in the dark. I like to make sure that that I'm you know comfy and and I got a blanket and I'm gonna sit here and I want to get scared. And you know, it's a it's difficult to do that now that we're you know, we're grown-ups, you know. Um but when there are real scary parts, there are real scary parts. And this one didn't have any for me, unfortunately.
SPEAKER_00I'm okay not being scared watching a movie. I very rarely get like actual scared when I watch a movie. I watch a lot of horror. I like I like to watch movies, even I like to re-watch movies, even though I've watched them several times. They could be one of my favorite horror movies, and it will never scare me again. But I truly enjoy still watching it. So I don't need this movie to scare me, really. I just need it to be like set the mood for me. I want to be able to get into it. I want to forget that I'm watching like a movie. If that I know that doesn't make sense. I'm sitting there watching a movie, and I want to forget I'm watching a movie. I realize that doesn't make sense, but I like to get into the world of whatever is going on. Like the movie that we watched last week, uh, What Evil Lurks, that really brought me into the world of what was going on. The rotten and the transporting of the possession away from their main village. Even though that had a character that was pissing me off, I it was still, it still kept me in the movie. I was just like, he was making the wrong decisions, but that made sense that he was making wrong decisions for that movie. The Conjuring movie, yeah, didn't scare me, didn't like it, but that still had a story to go with it. We have the uh first movie that we did or that we discussed was Talk to Me. That was a great movie, didn't scare me, but really put me in the mood because we were talking a lot a lot about uh in that respect. It was it had more to do with the fact that it was talked about the mental health aspect. Live streaming it here went in, and it just it didn't work for me. That's the only thing that I think was interesting about the movie that they decided to do it as a live streaming event, but then they ruined it at the end when it reminded me a lot of that movie. Do you remember? I think it's called um Truth or Dare. There is oh God, I wish I could remember exactly. See, that's how how bad and I threw it out of my mind because that's how much I didn't like it. But there's a somebody records themselves saying something and then they blast it out into the internet, and then everybody's suddenly affected by that demon that got thrown out into the, you know, outside the internet, outside into the real world. That's what they did with this movie, but they did it so stupidly because they showed us what everybody did. At least in that movie that I'm talking about, I think it's called Truth or Dare, they didn't show us the aftermath of what happens when the demon makes it out of the internet. Leave it up to the imagination. And they didn't leave it up to the imagination. Oh, you like that, okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. One of the only parts that I liked was that it showed it going out. Really? Yeah. I like that. It was um, I just I needed something. I needed something. And yeah, the the demon coming out and all the people that were possessed, like some sort of virus that kicked off, and that one made me like that. That should that's usually like what the beginning of a movie is when you know shit already hit the fan, and that that that it's in the wrong part, it's at the wrong spot, you know. It should have happened sooner, or it could have been the beginning of a movie, um, but it just it came a little too late, that's all to me. That's that was the only problem. It was it it should have happened a lot sooner.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01And we didn't need to see No, we just didn't need to see the um the son go and kill the president.
SPEAKER_00Um See, that's what I'm talking about. We didn't need I feel we didn't need to see that. I think it should be.
SPEAKER_01Leave it to the imagination. It should have just ended and then the credits shown, you know, things in the background of people attacking other people like that. Um I think that would have been really cool.
SPEAKER_00I think. Even do it a little shaky. If you want to give us a glimpse, do it, do it a little bit, I don't know. No, not even, because this movie went, I think you said it was 90 some minutes long and and it already seemed too long. So yeah, I was gonna say show us cli little little shakiness, little like uh day of the dead, you know, when you kind of get glimpses of what's happening. Something like that.
SPEAKER_01That's exactly what I was thinking.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Half a little bit uh leave something to the imagination because but at that point I had already checked out and they had already shown us too much. So I I think I was probably not gonna be happy with anything. I'm just total, total Debbie Downer when it comes to this movie because I feel like coming into this discussion, I just decided to start pointing out all the negatives. And I really didn't mean to, because I was gonna talk about like the rules and things like that. But then the more I got I I was going through my notes, I realized it just there really weren't any, there weren't any rules, which is what I wanted to discuss. Uh the premise, like I said, was good, but that was about it. I feel bad because I I don't like and you and you wouldn't know this, you all that are listening right now, because it seems like I've been shitting on the movies a lot lately, but I really don't like to talk bad about movies. I like to find the good in things, the things that I enjoy, and then if I don't like it, I'll just be like, eh, it wasn't for me. Not gonna watch it again. I wouldn't recommend it or something, but I can always pick out things that somebody would like about a movie, and I'm honestly for this one. I mean, if you want to waste some time and have nothing else to watch, nah, I would still recommend another movie. Yeah. I can't even say that the the premise itself itself is something that because there's other movies that that I'm sure do it better than this. Even that movie that I didn't like, that when I mentioned, I I think it's called Truth or Dare, I think probably did it better than this one because they left things up to your imagination for you at least.
SPEAKER_01But I wouldn't not recommend it because I have more of a neutral feeling about the movie. I would definitely just look it up, see if that's something that you're interested in, and maybe we're wrong, you know, and you'll never know unless you watch it. But me personally, just more neutral. I I think I didn't like The Devil Made Me Do It. Like and this one, I'm more of a neutral feeling. That's where I am on the movies that we watch Talk to Me and When Evil Lurks, loved. Yeah. Loved. And then I've got one that I don't like, The Devil Made Me Do It. And then this one, I'm totally neutral on it. So that's how I feel about this month's movies.
SPEAKER_00Okay. All right. I the Talk to Me, the uh When Evil Lurks, definitely I recommend you know I don't like The Devil Made Me Do It. But even that movie, I'd say you you know, is for in my opinion, better than this one. The whole just slapping on more and more and more to the movie to keep it going. I think they wanted a runtime. I think they thought they needed something in the 90 minutes. Now that you say it was 90 minutes, because I thought it was longer than that, but now knowing it wasn't that long, what was it, 96 minutes or whatever, now knowing it was that short makes me feel like they just kept adding stuff to the movie because they feel like they had to add something to the movie because there was a lot going on. There was maybe one cool scene where, even though I kind of complained about it a little bit, uh, where the guy who is high and is seeing things, and there's a part where he's seeing uh the demon or the demons or whatever, nobody else can see them, and they kind of disappear for a little bit, and then it starts to attack him, and so that's how he starts attacking himself to ultimately kill himself. That was kind of a fun idea, you know. Looking at it, if you're looking at it from the outside, you're seeing somebody attack themselves. Okay, but it uh it just it ended up not working though, because again, they could have done more practical effects with that, but then they threw in a schlocky demon into the mix, CGI demon. It's like you can't have practical effects with CGI mixed together and expect me to get excited about the scene. I just think they could have picked sticking with the practical effects in that scene, but adding on. It's like me getting, you know, remember how you used to add clip art to your art, to your pictures and stuff like that? That's that's kind of the the vibe it gave me. That it just looked like they were like having fun with, oh, let me let me drag and drop this demon into the scene. I don't know. That's it for possessions. I think I'm done. And next month is the month of October, which we're gonna be discussing ghosts. And I was gonna say in Halloween. Yeah, yeah, we're gonna be discussing Halloween, of course. Ghosts supernatural, all that. Yeah. Really good.
SPEAKER_01Well, that's definitely better just because it's Halloween. We'll definitely have much more fun with. Yeah, Halloween is the month of October. So talking about ghosts, yes, hopefully we can find something scary for me. Something scary. I love having a good ghost story. I love a good ghost story. I just imagine sitting around with somebody and telling all of a sudden somebody's saying, Did I ever tell you about that time that I saw like that?
SPEAKER_00I love that. It really is the mood I'm in. It really does. Halloween puts me into this amazing mood of like I don't get me wrong, I love my slashers. I love I do believe it or not, love my possessions and all that. But there's something fucking fun about ghosts and the supernatural. And yeah, it's gonna be a great month. So looking forward to it to it. In the meantime, Alma, tell us how people can get a hold of us, our website, where they can find us on socials, all that good stuff.
