Hey, it's Dahlia. And I'm Alma. Welcome to the Gory Details podcast where we discuss horror from every angle. We break it down with humor, sarcasm, and curiosity, looking at what scares and excites us most, what gets ignored, and the people shaping the genre right now. Alma, this is we're wrapping up the possession month. I was gonna say the possession week. That would no that would be weird. Um this month we've been discussing um possession movies. And this week we got When Evil Lurks on the topic or on discussion or in play. We're gonna discuss when evil lurks. And this is an Argentinian movie, and it was it is in Spanish for people who are going to go look for it after we discuss the movie. You want to watch it if you haven't watched it yet? Don't be surprised. It is supposed to be in Spanish. It's Argentinian, like I said. Yeah, don't let that deter you because it is a good movie. Oh, did I ruin it? There. That's it. I'm done talking. Now we already know.

SPEAKER_01

Dalia thinks it's good. Way to go, Dalia.

SPEAKER_03

I ruined it all. I ruined the whole movie. So let's just get into it, okay? This movie, Rotten Tomatoes. I didn't even have to tell you that it was a good movie. Rotten Tomatoes was telling you it was a good movie. 96%. 90%. Yeah. 84%, I think, for the audience um meter or whatever they call it, the audience uh reviews was 84%. So that's another one that is surprising because last week, well, the past couple of weeks, we've been having movies where they're opposite. So either the movie is really liked by critics in panned by the general audience, or vice versa. And in this week's movie, When Evil Lurks, it's loved by everybody, including apparently Dahlia, who could who can't even keep a secret. Nope. Nope. Nope. IMDB describes this movie as an in a remote village, two brothers find a demon-infected man just about to give birth to it to evil itself. They decide to get rid of the body only to end up unintentionally spreading chaos. That's pretty good. I like this description.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I do too. I mean, that is exactly what's happening. Okay, in the beginning of the movie, we have Pedro and Jaime, brothers, who hear some gunshots out on along their property. And in the morning they wake up, they go check it out, and they find a half of a person. Just a half. Somebody who's been cut up and some equipment, and they go to go investigate because they think it has something to do with the neighbor, uh, Ruiz.

SPEAKER_03

So they go to- I want to talk about, I'm gonna cut you off real quick. Sorry. Uh-huh. We're going to go to Ruiz's, but first I want to talk about how long it took them to go check it out. They heard the gunshots, they were talking about how close they were. So they're out in the country. So it's not a big deal that they're hearing gunshots. Like that's kind of shit's to be expected. But the proximity to their place was what piqued their interest. It was like, oh, that's like this close. Uh and um, so they know something's up, they think something's going on at Ruiz's place, but they don't go check it out that night. And I thought at first I was kind of laughing. It's like, well, how concerned are you if you're not gonna go check it out? But then at the same time, I'm also like, well, yeah, I probably wouldn't go out there either because it's nighttime, no matter if I'm armed, because they don't just go out there. They they have their own guns, rifles, shotguns, whatever. They have it, so they're not going in just completely unprotected after hearing gunshots, but they don't go at nighttime. And I thought, like, smart move. After I kind of like j joked around with myself and thought that that was kind of they weren't that really concerned, it made sense that they didn't go out to the morning. They didn't go out to the morning not because they thought it was something that it ended up being. They just prudently said, Oh, well, let's wait till the morning. And then they go over to their neighbor Ruiz's place.

SPEAKER_01

And that's when they find the body, that's when they find the equipment, that's when they decide that they're going to go check out um Ruiz's place, and they speak to him, and they go speak to somebody else um on the property. I guess people who help him run his property.

SPEAKER_03

Is that what I assumed. I assumed they were they were like the hired hands of the property. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. And when they come upon the property, they speak to the the woman of the house, and she says her son, she was waiting for somebody to come from town to come kill her son. Uh, he has been possessed, and they've been waiting a year, a year for someone to respond to this. This is where the whole alternate reality um comes to play. Here in this reality, there is no um belief in church and Jesus, I guess, and all those sorts of things, but they do believe in possession, and it's something that's taken care of by officials, by professionals, and that's who was supposed to be coming to visit. And so then they figure out okay, the man who's dead is definitely the person who was coming to take care of the the rotten one. And when they go see the rotten one, the lady's son, we see this bedridden man in the most horrible state that you can always. He was rotting.

SPEAKER_03

He was rotting.

SPEAKER_01

That definitely the word that they use rotten is exactly what you would picture here. Yeah. And oh, and it's it's a mess. It's a mess. And they get angry because they're like, when did you tell you're supposed to report these things? And she says, you know, that they're they did report it a year ago. And so they go now to this is like quickly moving. Yes, they go to the um police to go report it and ask why nobody's handled it, and they they just figured they were just gonna leave it alone, I guess, because it's a small town and things like this happen in big cities, and and they're just ignoring it and hoping the problem would go away on its own. I guess that's what they were waiting for.

SPEAKER_03

And well, they're also I don't know, they don't really know what they're doing at the end of the day either.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, no, they don't. But it's Ruiz who ends up handling the situation because he thinks this is gonna get worse for them. He ends up deciding that they're gonna get rid of this body, not the body, because he's still alive, that they're going to drag him out of the house with the help of Pedro and Jaime, and they could disco decide to dump the man far, far away from the property so that it's no longer their their problem.

SPEAKER_03

But they're not just dumping a man, they're dumping a possessed person.

SPEAKER_01

Possessed person.

SPEAKER_03

So I just I found okay, so going back, it's I forget the brother's name. It was the two brothers uh that we meet in the beginning that hear the gunshots going on at Ruiz's house. When they go over to Ruiz's land, they find the hired hands, and then they go to Ruiz, and Ruiz, like you said, is the one that says, let's get this possessed person off of my property, and then it'll be someone else's problem, basically. And when he does that, I found it interesting because they're like they end up going like they say 200 kilometers, and then they're like, is this far enough? It's like, no, another, let's keep going. I'm like, God damn, how far are you gonna drive? How how much land do you have? How much property do you have? Where are you guys? So they dump, they go to dump him, and then he's not in the back. He fell out. He fucking fell out of the back.

SPEAKER_01

And there's just no way he fell out. I mean, he came out of there somehow, right? Which is the creepier part because he's in the bed of the yeah, but he had to have fallen out when there was a point where um they almost hit a boy in the road. Yeah. And they they had to swerve perhaps. Yes, when they swerved that the the man fell out of the truck. I pictured him crawling out of it, like in the most sinister way possible, just like creepy crawling, you know, his pus-filled body. I gagged a lot seeing that man. So yeah, just picture that. And it's good. But they're like, okay, well, he's still not our problem anymore. Let's go back home. And so the brothers go back home. Luis goes back home to his pregnant wife. Pregnant wife. Mm-hmm. And when she gets up in the morning, she claims that she sees one of the goats is possessed. And when she does that, that scared the shit out of me because I'm like, they had a hundred goats. And she points one out, and they both see it. And I'm like, how do they know it was that?

SPEAKER_03

It must have been doing something really freaky geeky for them to be like, Yep, I see it. I totally see it.

SPEAKER_01

Yep, I was waiting to see one standing on two legs.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it was just children. It was just, but it they scared off all the other ones, and it was the only one that was still just there.

SPEAKER_01

And one of the rules, which Dalia loves rules. And when people Yes, Dalai loves rules, and when there's in this environment, um, in this world, you're not supposed to kill the possessed ones, period. That's a job for the professionals, but also you're not supposed to deal with the evil with bullets of any kind. So he has a gun, and the wife is pleading with him not to shoot the goat because the evil will spread, and he does it anyway. He shoots the goat, and instantaneously she whacks him in the side of the head with the axe, and then uses the same axe to take her own life. And that was done so swiftly, so without a breath, that it was shocking.

SPEAKER_03

And yeah, it was it was shocking because it was just You weren't expect I wasn't expect I was expecting something, I just wasn't expecting that because it happened like you said, so quickly.

SPEAKER_01

Uh just just boom, boom, boom.

SPEAKER_03

That's how it, that's how it's dead. You're dead, you're dead, you're dead. And that's yeah. And that's how this movie does it. It can be kind of like, okay, we're gonna chill for a little bit, we're gonna set up the mood a little bit, we're gonna make you feel safe for a little bit, think you thinking that you know what's gonna happen, and then all of a sudden, bam, in your face. Because there's another moment where you feel the tension building up big time and you know something's about to happen, and you know what's gonna happen. But when it actually happens, it freaked me the fuck out. Later on in the movie, we have an instance where um, oh my god, I keep forgetting his fucking name, Pedro, right? He goes, yeah, he goes to try to save his children uh from this spreading disease of possession, and he wants to go save, and there's uh his ex-wife's daughter, she gets you know mauled by a dog. But you see it coming. I saw it coming. Yes, I knew it was gonna happen. Everything, everything was leading to what was gonna happen, but it's still when you see this all start to go down, it's like holy shit, they went there. Yes, they did. And it was the whole entire scene was done so well because they're building up that tension. You got three adults over here fighting, you have little kids kind of like trying to see what's going on and trying to figure out what's going on, and then you also have normalcy by this little girl that's just chilling with her dog, and then something happens in your face that you saw coming, and then it just keeps going and going and going because it doesn't end there. It takes it to another level because then you have parents that are trying to deal with the situation, but at the same time, you have this possession going on at the same time. So you have like this mix of, oh shit, something's happened to a child, but at the same time, you're like, oh, but it's a demon, but it's still my kid, and it's just like it's one thing after another after another. And then when you finally get a breather, it's like, oh, we're gonna fuck it up even more. Here we go.

SPEAKER_01

The energy doesn't end, it just keeps going. The the chaos, that's why in the There you go, chaos, yeah. Yeah, in all the chaos, it just keeps getting worse for them. They keep making the wrong decision. Well, it's a yeah, you're right.

SPEAKER_03

Uh-huh. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Pedro is trying to save his children in the process, his wife, ex-wife gets killed. Yeah. Then the then everybody is doing the wrong thing. Everybody, even though they know these rules and everything, but in the chaos and all that that heart-pumping moments and all the the um everything that's happening, nobody is taking the time, of course, to um figure out what the right thing to do is. I know. They just want to. Pedro wants to get his children out of there, and he gets his children out of there, but it but Sabrina, his ex-wife, is dead. And it looks like the little girl is possessed because she ends up being unmauled and just fine, dancing around while her mother gets squished by a car. And um, they end up moving along to someone else's house. Um, they pick up their mom. They pick up the mom. So it's like, who else are they gonna involve in this fuckery? Let's see here. Let's pick up mom while we're at it. Bringing everybody into this possession party. Yes. Grandma's here now, and she's like, What's going on? Why are my grandkids here? And she's just being very cute, like, oh, we're going on a visit. No, no, she was going ridiculous. Yeah. And they end up running off to another property, another lady's house, because Taime says he thinks he knows somebody who knows all about the possession and stuff because he recognized the equipment. So they end up at another woman's house named Myrta. And that's when she starts telling them some of the other rules. And oh, and at one point, the the grandma in the backseat of the car is singing a song about the end of rotten, you know, la la la. They start getting, you know, evil spreading, and and then she's talking about the rules, and and we have to never to say the name of the demon. Like, like, what's the name, Grandma? Uh, like Azriel or Lucifer or blah, blah, blah. Stop saying the names, grandma. It's just like everything, everything that they're doing is wrong.

SPEAKER_03

But it's still so well done, I think. Yeah. It's so funny because it's making everybody make all the wrong decisions, but the movie is still so well done because you still you're you're going along with everything, just getting frustrated along with with everything. And because it you're right. I think everybody did have bad decisions or did make bad bad decisions along the way. But I feel that Pedro was the number one guy here that I think from the very beginning really made what happened at the end like it was all his fault. Where ultimately this in I say infection, I I it's not a zombie movie, Dahlia. But basically, it's like it is like an infection. This possession spread even further. Everything they were trying to prevent happened because of every bad choice he made, because of selfish choices he made along the way. Yes, we're all gonna be selfish when we're in the moment, but I still think that his decisions were not just selfish. It's not like oh, my kids, I I need to save them, because even when he was saving his kids, he made truly selfish decisions along the way that were that would only benefit him in that moment. Just the way he went about, like even his brother, he was like, Let's separate and let's do these things. What I mean, I know it's not a supernatural entity that's like like latching on to them like right away, and they're trying to avoid these things, but I just think doing the things together would have made things it would just think of that scene when they were in the house, when that poor little girl gets taken, and then the the ex-wife ends up getting killed and all of that. That could have gone about a different way if both brothers were there, I think. One person looking out for the other. I don't know. That's I it just it was truly aggravating seeing his every decision that he made just end up turning things into the next horrible decision he was gonna make.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, just get worse. And you'd think that that was the worst of it. And then it gets worse. And he ends up with his two sons at Midda's place.

SPEAKER_03

Who by the way, can we say, can we talk about is she an ex-lover here? Yes. What the fuck?

SPEAKER_01

She's Jaime's ex-lover. No, but I mean ex-teacher. Oh, and oh, was she a teacher too? His teacher? I don't know. I mean, the allude that he likes older women, but that's it. Okay. I don't think she was a teacher. I I thought I heard her say him say maestra at some point. So it could have been, but I didn't I didn't get the vibe that it was like a high school. School thing. I I got the vibe that it was like a when he was an adult thing. I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

All I know is that she she was uh an ex-lover of his, and I found that part of the story really interesting because then this is not Pedro, this is uh Jaime, his brother. It's like the only glimpse into the brother that we really get to see because it's all I mean, there's a lot going on, and you get to see a little bit of everybody's story, but you're really involved in Pedro. It's like you're following Pedro throughout the movie of what's going on, even though it does, you know, the story does go away from him at points. Um it's Pedro we're following. But I liked getting to see Jaime's story, the little that we got to see, uh, because he did seem like he probably had a better head on his shoulders than his brother. He is the little brother. Uh and I don't know if it makes a difference, but it just seemed like he had his shit a little bit more together than his brother, Pedro.

SPEAKER_01

Pedro they allude to him like just having Pedro had gotten in trouble with the law because of his children. Um Jaime was there to help him through that, and Jaime is the one who works with him. He he listens to his big brother, he does what his big brother says. And if it wasn't for that, he and well, spoiler alert, because he makes he does live at the end of the movie at least that much. But I think it's basically because he's also been doing what his brother says, but also managed to follow his gut.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Jaime is probably a character that would have been a little bit more fun to explore, maybe, or maybe maybe it's perfect that we didn't. That way we could not care at the end what happens to him because his brother fucked it all up, and then we'd be mourning the existence of what's gonna happen to them. Because, like Alma said, I know we're all about spoilers. I mean, obviously, uh, at the end of the movie, it's like we're left with this what's gonna happen next. It's spread beyond the confines of this, what was it, a village, a town, or whatever. Yeah, and yeah. So we have possessed kids, we have uh people that are getting murdered. Yeah, people that are getting murdered, and and so it's obviously not going to be a very nice future for these people if it's going off beyond this. And it looks like anybody can catch this possession infection, because we'll we'll get into the rules a little bit here. Um and I would feel really bad for the brother, Jaime, for all of this, but luckily I guess we didn't get to know him that well, so we don't have to, we don't have to feel too bad for him because it's just like, oh, okay. Everybody And we know everything.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, everybody, well, the thing is spread before the evil enters into the world completely. The one of the rules is that they don't use electricity. Yeah. And the nearby town went black, so they knew that the evil had spread into that vicinity because they turned out the lights. And that's a pretty creepy one. That's they mess with the lights really cool.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah. Because something about the shadows, they like they lurk in the shadows. And uh, hey, lurks. Um, but yeah, so there's like different rules. There's supposed to be seven rules or seven? Seven. Yeah. But did we find out the seventh rule in the movie, or does she just not share it? Don't be afraid to die.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, okay. Okay. That's a hard one. Like, how are you gonna be not afraid to die?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

When everybody is dying. That rule is like, yeah, you can't follow that rule.

SPEAKER_03

You can't. And that's why you're you end up getting fucked in the end. There's the different rules. I can't remember all of them um off the top of my head, but um, each rule, when it's broken, creates some kind of chaos or um spread of this infection, possession infection. Um, I would think that when they shot it, the way I imagined it uh was a lot like just particles of the evil just kind of like shooting out like like little bits of blood, but each little bit of blood was like evil and possession spreading. And that's how I saw it. Aerosolizes it and spreads it around. And then you end up getting it on yourself, and even if you aren't personally possessed or infected with it, you are taking that somewhere else. Because that's how it ended up happening. Um, Pedro got some possession on him, on his clothes when he was disposing of the body. And well, I why do we I can't really say body because the person was still living when he was because he was getting rid of the first possessed rotten person. And he got it on himself, and the dog got curious off of the scent and off of whatever was on his clothing. And so the dog nuzzling around, licking, smelling the clothes, that's how the dog ended up getting possessed. So every little thing that you're doing, it's like a that's why I say it's like a fucking infection. It just spreads, even if you aren't the one, it's like a cold or a flu. You may not be the one that gets the cold or the flu, but you still got the fucking virus and all the fucking germs to take to someone else. Maybe they're gonna be the one that gets sick. So what was uh distinction between this possession and the past possessions that we've talked about? We talked about talk to me and oh my god, what was the other movie? The conjuring, the devil made me do it. Oh, see, yeah. The devil made me forget that movie. I'm sorry. I obviously had issues with that other movie. But so what is a good distinction from this? What makes dispossession different? Obviously, quite a few things, but what is one thing that just jumps out at you that makes dispossession different different than the other movies?

SPEAKER_01

The fact that it's pretty much a fact that this is how it happens, that there's rules, that there's officials that handle this, that makes it very different. Also, it's so physical. It's so physical. Yes. The the possession, the like the way you describe it, the way it spreads, the way that people become infected with it, with the evil, um, the way that the little kids get possessed, the way that the corpse gets possessed of of the ex-wife. Everything is very physical and very spready quickly.

SPEAKER_03

It's yeah, no, it is. It is a very physical movie. And that's what I was thinking about. Um after I watched the movie, like obviously the movie it sits, it sits with you. I was still feeling that visceral feeling of when that little girl gets taken of watching that first uh possessed, um, rotten. I know it sounds horrible that we're calling them a rotten, but that's what they were calling them, the rotten one. And then uh the other part that really just really fucking stuck with me was when the not the mom, Ruiz's pregnant wife fucking just whacked him and then whacked herself. Those it it wasn't the images, the images were good, don't get me wrong. They did a great job with that. Uh practical, fabulous, loved it. If there was CGI involved, it was didn't take away from what happened because I just saw what was happening in front of me. My point is that it wasn't just the visible, the visual aspect of it, it's what it left in me, like to my core. It's that feeling of evil that made that happen so quickly. It was like you take away a pregnant woman, she was visibly pregnant. That's like really fucked up to kill a pregnant woman. I mean, we all saw it in uh the wax, what was it called? The house of wax when they killed Paris Hilton that she was pregnant. No. Oh yeah, this woman was pregnant, yeah. And then you do it with a little girl as well, a cute little girl, by the way. And then you have the dog get possessed. So it wasn't just visually like shocking. It was to me shocking to my core because it was really evil. It liked it. I don't know. It just it it's it still sits with me in like a really freaky way, but not in a way that is that turned me away from the movie, like, oh, they went too far. I don't think so. I think it was like fucking evil just doing what it does and latching on to things that you wouldn't expect to become possessed. How many times have you seen this movie?

SPEAKER_01

Three times. I think this is the third time.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I think so. And I d I don't think that it gets less harsh. What's the word I'm looking for? I don't think it gets it gets less anything. There's nothing that gets more uh like comfortable to watch. There's nothing that gets more um I think you said it yeah, the the discomfort.

SPEAKER_03

It's like really uncomfortable. Thank you. You came you came up with the word that I'm I've been trying to find. It's really uncomfortable. It makes me uncomfortable.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, and it's just messed up. It's so messed up. And listening to him at the end crying, it's just hits me the same way each time. Each time. It doesn't get less uncomfortable to watch.

SPEAKER_03

Did you like the bleakness of the end?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I did. I I can't believe that they they made it so bleak is the word.

SPEAKER_03

Could it have gone any worse?

SPEAKER_01

Like uh the thing is, it is getting worse. It's gonna get worse, and but it couldn't get worse. Each moment that was bad was like how it couldn't be worse. It couldn't be worse. You had to say that every time it couldn't be worse, just at the each each thing that got worse.

SPEAKER_03

Right. But that's what I keep I I I'm doing a really bad job of it. I'm trying to describe because like I said, I keep coming back to visually. Visually, the movie was done right because it showed things that other movies either won't show, which is fine, that's cool, or things that other movies will show you, but they'll do it in a hokey way, you know? So when I'm describing a woman taking an axe to her head, that's fucked up. But when it showed it, yes, it's visually shocking, and it's like, what the actual fuck is going on here? It it's not just the visual aspect of it, it's what's every part of the story that's going on. Because like I said, it happens really quickly, you're not expecting it. And then again, I'm I'm talking, it's how this she's a pregnant woman that got possessed, or did she? I don't know. I I'm confused on that one. I I read that she was possessed, but either way, it's really messed up because they're taking things that should be untouchable. You shouldn't, you're not supposed to mess with the pregnant woman and they went and fucking messed with the pregnant woman. You're not supposed to kill the kids. Oh, yeah, you think we're gonna take it up a notch.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, let's kill them kids.

SPEAKER_03

So, and not only that, it's you know me, and I'm I'm gonna mention it in case other people have problems with it. It has aspects of cannibalism, but not, but it doesn't. And I say cannibalism because in the true definition of the word, we have they fucking are eating other people. But you don't think of it like in a cannibalistic way, it's in a fucked up possession demon-eating people kind of way. So it's like, wait a minute, what? So if you haven't watched this movie and you're listening to us talk, you're probably thinking, like, this movie sounds bonkers, and it is, and it's really good. It's really we should watch it. Good because it is good going in. Yeah, that it was gonna be out there, and I still was like, give it to me.

SPEAKER_01

Because this one of the few movies that really scared me, that really, really scared me to my core. It's one of the movies that really got visceral reaction out of me several times throughout it. It definitely, definitely is one of the movies that I remember without having to think too hard about it. If that's why we picked it, because it was outstanding in the possession category.

SPEAKER_03

So when we're talking about the demons in this movie, do you think it's just one demon or several demons, or what do you think is going on?

SPEAKER_01

I think it's definitely several demons. I think that they're just like in the other possession movies when they're like, we need to find out what the name of the d what demon it is or whatever. Um I think that they're definitely different. And maybe the demon itself can possess more than one person at a time. Oh that's why why it spreads so easily to the next person, the next person. Because even his son gets possessed, yeah. So I think that yeah, definitely that's how it works.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I yeah, I I do think there's more than one demon. Um personally. Um I I know you're going with the thought that it could, you know, spread like the one demon could spread. Uh I can't talk. Um it's possession. But I do think there's more than one demon strictly for the fact that there is a moment where um when was it? Okay, so let me let me go down through everybody that was possessed. It was in the beginning we have the OG son of the caretakers, and then it jumps to the goat to Ruiz, to the pregnant wife, and then oh see, I confused myself because how when did it get yeah? Okay, no, I'm looking back now because I thought I had my ideas of what was going on, but now I'm thinking about because they got rid of the body, and that possession's going on, and then there is this possession going on over here. So yeah, no, I was right. Those are the pos that's why where I got the idea that it was more than one possessed, I mean one more than one demon, because uh the locations they were separated. At least that's what I thought. It was around the same time that this was going on. The possession, I think, got like you said, out of the back of the car or the truck, right? You thought it crawled away. I think it latched onto the little kid on the bike and that it got away. Mm-hmm off of the body. Mm-hmm. No, see, I'm thinking I'm sitting no, because I'm sitting here thinking about it too, because it was on his clothes and then it stayed on the body because the little kids fucking dragged that body and put it underneath the fucking floor. So see, I don't even know what's going on because I thought I had an idea of what was going on, but I don't think I do. I like that. That's fun. See, maybe I should have sat with this movie a little bit longer because I'm this, I like this. You're you're getting real time like if I'm watching this live right now, because I'm trying to, I'm still trying to figure out what happened. Because it spread on the from the clothes on him to the dog getting it, but it was still with the body that was being hidden underneath the floor by the kids. And then it had gotten into before that, the wife.

SPEAKER_02

Well, Ruiz. No.

SPEAKER_01

Did it ever get into Ruiz? I don't think it did, because one of the rules says if you use a gun that it will kill you too. So I think he just was killed. And I feel like she was possessed because of it. I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

No, that's cool. It's kind of cool not knowing, though, because it is confusing. You don't you don't know. And maybe that's part of what we're supposed to be doing. We don't know what is them reacting to what's going on, and what is his hysteria or what is part of the actual possession. Because it could be that the wife kills him, Ruiz, because he just did something he wasn't supposed to do. And then maybe she kills herself with the axe because she thinks she's done for. Maybe she never actually got possessed. She just fucking like, I'm not gonna survive this.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's dark.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So, see, like I said, it's like I I'm I'm still figuring out what's going on with this movie. I went basically from having watched it straight to talking about it right now. So I'm still thinking about it. I like it either way. This is a fucking really, really good movie. And I think I'm gonna watch it again probably next weekend so I can kind of pick up on little things here and there. I did read about this movie. It's not like I didn't go in having done my reading about this movie. It's just what I saw. didn't exactly match up with what I was reading. Like it said what I was reading that uh the jumping of the demon, I guess it's a demon, uh, was happening as each person was getting killed. Like the goat got killed, it went to Ruiz. Ruiz died, and then it went to the pregnant wife. Um and then with the little girl and the dog and all that. But I kind of see it differently, like things reacting to what's going on around them, and that some of that chaos is what is the demon is driving off of.

SPEAKER_02

Thriving, not driving. Or both.

SPEAKER_01

Do you have any closing thoughts? No, just bleakness, depression, yeah, sadness. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And yeah, it doesn't end pretty, but that's kind of what's fun about it, I think. Definitely. Alright. So tell me one thing of the rules that the grandma had about this movie. You said don't use guns. Um, I'm not gonna remember all of them.

SPEAKER_01

It was uh don't speak its name, stay away from animals, do them no harm, take nothing close to them, they're attached to it. Never say the devil's names that calls them. Never use a gun. Do not use electric lights. Right. And after your death.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, which one would have been the first one that you broke?

SPEAKER_01

Probably electric lights, man. I'm sorry. I need to be able to see in the darkness, it's just making it worse. The the lights didn't even save them. Okay.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah. No, I I I was thinking about them because they're all very breakable rules. And like you said, that last one, don't be afraid to die. It's gotta be the no matter how brave you're being, no matter how I'm gonna get through this moment, no how, no matter how invincible and high on the on adrenaline you may be at the moment, there's still gonna be that doubt that's gonna come into you. Oh shit, I'm gonna die. And that's the moment that it's gonna fucking turn around and bite you in the ass. So you can't control how you feel. The other things I feel like I could control. I can control maybe the lights, I can control what taking you said, taking something from them, all these other things don't be around animals. That's a harder one because I love my babies, I love my doggies. But uh feeling the, you know, like that's why I can't be around horses because they say horses feel your fear. Horses scare me. And yeah, they do. I've ridden horse, I've ridden a horse before, and the whole time I'm like, I know this fucking horse just wants to kick me off of its back. So you can't control how you fear. I mean, fear, feel well, fear, yes, because at the end of the day, it's that fear is gonna get me killed in the fucking supernatural world, the world of possession. That was when evil lurks in 2023. Didn't say that. I watched this on Shudder. Is that the only place I find it? Okay. Um well, that's why I watched it. Okay. Luckily, I have Shudder for those that don't have it. I'm sure you could find it other places. You'll probably have to pay for well, I have to pay for Shudder too, so it's not like I'm not paying for Shudder. It's not free just because I don't have to pay stealing it. But excellent movie. Watch it. We're coming into October. Throw it on your to watch list if you haven't done it, or if you have watched it, watch it again. And then fucking tell me, did I get all the demon jumping around wrong? Because I think that it was more than one demon, and then they're loving the chaos, but maybe it's like an omnipresent demon, like Alma thinks it is, or I don't know if you think it is, but you suggested that it could be, and is just kind of like everywhere all at once. Where can they tell us what they think about this movie, about possessions, about demons? Where can our listeners give us all their thoughts? Good and bad. You can visit us on only give us the good ones.

And that was when, oh my god, I almost did it again. When evil lurks. I was gonna say, when the evil lurks. I I have trouble with names and I have trouble with titles, apparently, but that's me, and uh sorry, I apologize. That's a wrap. Until next week. Bye. Bye bye.
