Hey, I'm Dahlia. And I'm Alma. Welcome to the Gory Details podcast, where we discuss horror from every angle. We break it down with humor, sarcasm, and curiosity, looking at what scares and excites us most, what gets ignored, and the people shaping the genre right now. All right. All right. I was gonna say all right and okay at the same time. So that sounded kind of weird. This month we are discussing possession. Um we talked about, oh my goodness, talk to me, right?
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes.
SPEAKER_01Yes, okay.
SPEAKER_00I almost forgot myself.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we discussed that one last week, which was, I think, a great conversation, great possession, interesting movie all around. But this week we are going, I don't know, is it a different direction in possession? We'll find out what Alma thinks. I know what I think already. Can y'all read my mind? So, possession this week is the conjuring, the devil made me do it. I think I said that right. Did I say that right? Yes, yes. Okay, yeah. I, well, I thought I was just the devil made me do it, but that's why I had to double check. I found this Rotten Tomatoes rating of this movie very interesting because we have been choosing movies the past few weeks, and their Rotten Tomatoes ratings have been pretty good for horror movies, in my opinion. This movie is the first one that unfortunately, according to Rotten Tomatoes, is uh not as good as the other ones. 56% on Rotten Tomatoes. Well, this is a critic rating. We we we discussed that a little bit last week. We just you know mentioned it real quick. These are critic ratings. It was like in the 80s, like 83, 84% for uh like the general audience uh reviews. So interesting because I think it was the reverse for the other movies. Uh we had high Rotten Tomatoes, which means the critics, and then lower um I forget what they call it, that's why I'm avoiding saying score. But the odd yeah, the audience score. Um it's reversed this time. So this one is more actually better received, I think, than the other movies we've been discussing the past weeks. What do you think about that?
SPEAKER_00That is interesting. I I would agree with the with the uh the critic side on this one, but I'm comparing it to the other the other movies in the in the franchise or in this series itself, the conjuring series, because the first two I liked better than this one. But we're not discussing those other ones, we're discussing this one.
SPEAKER_01No, but that is interesting that you say that, because then that means if you are the same on the along the same lines of thinking as far as liking this one less than the other conjuring movies, and seeing that it did well with the audience, the other ones must have done much better. I could see that. I can see that. Anyway, so I just found that interesting. Um probably this one is uh even though it uh scored uh in the lower ratings for horror compared to the other movies, this movie's still doing better than horror movies in general, Rotten Tomatoes. But I always find that fascinating. What what the critics like versus what the audience likes. Because sometimes it's like opposites like this. Okay, so getting into the movie itself, let's talk about who wrote it, who directed it, who was in it, all that good stuff.
SPEAKER_00All right, uh, it was directed by Michael Chavez. The writers, well, we had the screenplay written by David Leslie Johnson McGoldrick, who is also responsible for the story along with James Wan, and it's based on characters created by Chad Hayes and Carrie W. Hayes. It stars Patrick Wilson as Ed Warren, Vera Formaga as Lorraine Warren, Rory O'Connor as Arnie, Sarah Catherine Hook as Debbie Glatzell, and Julian Hilliard as David Glatzell. Okay.
SPEAKER_01So how many of these besides the Warrens are uh characters that are been in other movies? In the other movies?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Just the two the two wards. They had the same daughter. The the daughter does come out in this one from the other ones, but I didn't I didn't mention her. Um she is the same as in like one or two of the other movies. But there's no return there's no um from the moon and cast, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Yeah, because I'm not I haven't watched these movies and I've only seen clips of them. So other than knowing that the Warrens obviously are part of the the recurring storyline of the Conjuring, I didn't know about any of the other characters. Um I thought maybe Arnie, who is going to be uh one of the characters we're discussing that's possessed in this movie. I thought the way they had set it up in the beginning, um, that maybe he had been in one of the past ones or something, because he was working with them in the beginning of this uh movie, wasn't he?
SPEAKER_00He's he's the the well, he's the boyfriend of the okay, so the possessed one is the little boy, David. His sister's boyfriend is Arnie.
SPEAKER_01Correct. But it looked like he was helping the Warrens, like directly. I assumed that he was working like Oh, okay, I see what you're trying to say.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. Yeah. Oh, okay. No. There's Shannon. Yeah. Shannon Cook, who is the helper, the the the guy throughout the movie who plays Drew. Um, he's in the other movies and he is the helper of I don't know what title you would give him. So I would just um like his job, he's their assistant, maybe? Assistant is their go-to guy. He's their research.
SPEAKER_01No, he's more than assistant because he was researching and doing all that other stuff too. Yeah. Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00He's big time like active in their um what they do. Okay. So everything.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So then it's but I guess it isn't as creepy. Maybe it still kind of is. I don't know. I thought Arnie, who is the boyfriend of the possessed little boy sister. Um, I thought the way it worked out was like Arnie was working with the warrants, and then they come onto the job and he meets the sister, and then he started dating her.
SPEAKER_00Okay. I see.
SPEAKER_01That's what I thought was going on. I th I was like, ooh, weird. But in this case, if it's maybe just strictly that he's the boyfriend of the sister, and he just happened to start helping out the Warrens, then that is probably a little bit not as creepy as I thought. If you think of it the other way, it was it's kind of like predatory. I thought it's like, okay, all right, this is going on, but let's move on. Um, yeah, so, anyways, that's what I thought. Either way, I just found this movie a little bit not as uh well, we'll we'll get into it because I want to discuss the rules and all that. But I was gonna say not as well formed of an idea as Talk to Me last was last week, for example. Um maybe you you picked up on that as well, and that's why maybe this one wasn't as interesting to you as the other conjurings. But um I just felt like the possession rules and the supernatural aspect of it was inconsistent, that it wasn't as, like I said, well formed of an idea. So I think that just kind of throughout the whole movie made it so that I wasn't really connecting with what was going on. I mean, I followed it, but it just wasn't like, uh, I'm not feeling it here.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I just I felt that way about this one. This one's the first one, too, that wasn't written by um the same people. The that's why the story is by somebody and the characters were based on Chad and Carrie Hayes because those were who wrote it in the beginning. And this one is um is different. It's different, and so the the vibes were off for me personally watching it. I just and I uh keep comparing it, and and and I the thing was I wanted to pick this one because I remembered that you had watched it, and I know that you hadn't watched the other ones, and so I remembered that, and so I was like, but this one was different from the other two movies, also, in that it had a case that it was based on that um would be interesting to note that there was an actual, you know, guy behind this that did a murder that claimed to be possessed, and so therefore it was it made it interesting, you know, because it made it, it would have made like headlines, you know, and it would have been like a huge a huge deal, I thought, you know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So just to explain, I mean, most people who are listening to this podcast are probably have seen the movie or at least know the general idea of what happens. A little boy in the beginning of the movie is possessed by a demon. Um, and the Warrens are there, and we have uh exorcism going on, and it just doesn't seem to be going right. And then there we have this that this is that little boy. Um, how maybe no more than 12, probably 10, 8. I'm really bad at guesstimating ages, as you can tell. I went from 12 all the way down to eight.
SPEAKER_00I think he's supposed to be eight years old, but I don't think he looks eight, but you're right. He's a kid.
SPEAKER_01He's a kid, he's a kid, and Arnie is what 20, 18? Anyways, range and age there is what I was trying to get at. Little boys possessed, Arnie, the big uh the the big guy in town, um, that I thought was uh coming onto the scene and being predatory and all that. Maybe not. It's maybe just the good sweet boyfriend. Because what does he end up doing? He gets in the middle of this possession and he's like, Hey, get out of this little boy coming to me. So the demon takes advantage of that invitation and is now in Arnie. Arnie ends up murdering someone while he's possessed. And when he is uh going to trial, the whole thing is, oh, I didn't do it because I was possessed. Which on our side, we're seeing, yeah, it looks like a legit possession going on over here. Of course, to everybody else, he's just wack-a-doodles because this was actually partly just maybe inspired by a real case.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01There was an actual uh I think they didn't even change the names, if I remember correctly.
SPEAKER_00No, it's it's the same and the the the guy they interviewed for the movie. Um so he was a consultant um for this movie. So yeah, they didn't change his name or anything. He was a real guy, and he lives today still with his girlfriend who he ended up marrying. See, I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_01Because um not gonna lie, this I just decided to not look into it because anytime anything is based or inspired by a true story, um, obviously it's not gonna be like legit all the way through. I totally get that. But it's just gonna confuse me if I know about the story and then I'm trying to trying to enjoy something. Uh and then afterwards, after I saw the movie, I was like, uh, I don't know if I even care.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah. It doesn't, it it doesn't, it doesn't matter because obviously it was nothing like the movie.
SPEAKER_01So well it's not the my point was I didn't care because I ended up not really liking this movie. So my interest just ended when the movie ended, honestly. And apologies to anybody who is a fan of the Conjuring series. They're not my cup of tea. And I went in trying not to hold that against the movie, especially because Alma said that this wasn't uh one of her favorite ones of the Conjuring. So I'm like, well, uh maybe I'll like it because maybe it's totally different um than the other ones. So, but no, I just ended up not really caring for the story all that much.
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01This was rules for possession and um supernatural elements that seemed to change throughout the movie as far as uh like what was going on and which you would think makes for a more interesting, engaging story. Like you're gonna be thinking, like, oh, what's gonna happen next? Oh, well, that's a nice little twist. Instead, it was like, well, that just doesn't make sense because you tried to establish a little bit ago that, for example, the invitation, uh Arnie said or invited the demon inside of him to get out of the little boy, right? So we it looks like we were establishing that you needed to invite the the possession somehow. But then we come to find out that it's because of a curse.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So then why did the demon, I'm gonna say demon, if it's something else I I'm sorry I didn't follow that, but then why did the demon wait to jump into army until he was invited in? That didn't make any sense to me. You see what I'm getting at? So you're gonna have to explain that to me because that that just didn't make sense to me.
SPEAKER_00Well, I I also picked it because it was a different kind of possession because it was based on the curse. Yeah. Curse is uh and the person doing the curse chooses exactly who that's how they made it seem, like they were picking somebody, but they didn't really pick somebody. They picked a spot and it ended up being the little boy who gets possessed first. And then Arnie, of course, he um is possessed and he is now how did they how when they were talking about it, they mentioned that he's not possessed all the time. Exactly.
SPEAKER_01Which would be interesting for uh the types of different types of possession like you just mentioned, that you chose this one because it was a different type of possession than the one we spoke about last week. That's what why we chose possession to discuss this month, because there are more than one type of, there is one more that than one type of possession. This week it's comes from a cursed, from a curse. Last week, when we discussed Talk to Me, it had to be from you inviting the uh the person or whatever into you. That's how this movie made it seem in the beginning.
SPEAKER_00And this is definitely a demon possession. They they go on further to describe it later, and um by the end of the movie, there's a part where I think it's the one of the warrants mentions the fact that the demon is the one that that the person cursing the occultist, is that what we call them? Um chose this demon to possess someone. And then they have to take two lives, one murdering and one by suicide. And so that's the way it's supposed to be. I'm getting confused listening to you, and I watched the movie. Here's the thing that the thing is that I really, really liked the first two movies. I really did. And then this one came along and it was just different, and it was just it just was wrong. I I was hoping you liked more of it so that way we would be on the side of I like this, and then I could say, well, I didn't like this. Now we're just going back to back, going, I didn't like this, and I didn't like that. But well, yeah, I'm sorry, go ahead. I expected the way that they made it seem so that sensationalized that, oh, he's gonna go on trial for the murder of this man who is a real person, by the way. This was a real person who was actually murdered.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And and it this doesn't seem like anybody cared. Um didn't. They they're supposed to be working on the trial. They got a lawyer who uses demonic possession as the circumstance by which he is not guilty. And they were going for first-degree murder, which what I, you know, I I wouldn't even I wouldn't agree with, but that's beside the point. This there was no there was no communication with the law, and and what the Warrens were doing was their own investigation. I think it was just too much, too much going on, and not enough of the other side of us to see how is this going on in court right now, you know? Right. No, we're gonna stick to this side. Let's find out who's trying to curse them. I I I think that was interesting in itself, but it wasn't enough. It wasn't enough. It they needed to be something, some sort of connection with the law side, because that's the whole movie point. Well, that's how they they advertised it, and that's what they showed in previews that you know they were gonna have this big case and they were going to help free this man who committed this crime.
SPEAKER_01murder by but it wasn't him he was he was possessed so it just was too much it had its creepy points though I like that I like the creepy points you know I did like that okay so yeah tell me a creepy point the I'm not I'm not putting you on the spot to be mean I'm putting you on the spot to help me out here because I'm trying to do the same thing too I'm trying to um I feel like I am shitting on this movie as well but I do want to look at the possession you know and let's let's talk about some fun things here movies that are able to create this in this case I don't know if this is the case for all of the conjuring but in this movie at least this possession has its rules in this universe this universe of where they're at this uh possession is gonna have its rules I love when movies can create their own lore and that's fun because you can you can say oh you know uh like for example you have like different kinds of vampires depending on which movie or which franchise or whatever right um you could do the same thing here with possession um but specifically the rules of this possession made me not have any fun with this because the rules were so scattered. Um in the beginning I thought it was a like I said a straightforward invitation possession which was uh I knew I was gonna change it up because it it was the Warrens and it was you know they had the this other supernatural elements going on and all that but I just didn't realize that the um the rules that I was going to try to establish were not going to make any sense. And I know when you go into horror movies you have to suspend disbelief and I'm totally cool with that.
SPEAKER_00I can be like yeah in the world in the real world possessions don't exist but in movies they can exist and it's fun so let's explore that more in this case it was just like pick like three rules and stick to it instead of try to you know they also they added it was they added too much they also solved another murder while doing this one don't laugh she put herself so she couldn't buy herself but they solved another murder and here's the thing I love the Warrens I love them they're a great couple they're great characters they they're the reason they put butts in seats okay that's why people went back to go watch it um because they got the Warrens and you've got Mrs. Warren I can't remember her name right now Lorraine um you've got her with her special powers and she can see and she's got whatever you call that power or whatever the scene power and they solve another murder and it's just while they're trying to solve this one and it just was it was too much it was too much. And that's why I I was like this is supposed to be about this one case which I didn't think that they were concentrating enough on the fact that there's a man on trial like what did they do? I don't know if I was expecting a law and order supernatural episode I kind of think that I was I kind of think that I was based on what the the context was of the movie and I didn't get that and so therefore I felt really let down but I did say that I did like certain parts of it because they kept the creepy vibes in it like the whole scene solving the murder that was good but it it could have just been removed it could have just been removed and the whole You mean like the ending the whole well the whole the whole case oh um the whole that whole missing persons case they could have never met with the detective and removed it from the movie and it would have been just fine. Not made the movie fine not made the movie fine but because what was its purpose right and so that was another piece where I was just a little lost as to what were they trying to do here.
SPEAKER_01Yeah yeah all I could keep saying is yeah because it's it's hard it's really hard to I can usually find something in a movie that I enjoy um even when I don't enjoy the movie. So like I said you know going into this movie I thought oh possession fun that'll be fun I get to watch what the rules are in this universe and see what happens and all that um but even even that was confusing. Like you said there was a lot going on there was two murders which you're thinking like two murders oh my god dahlia that's like movies have like a billion in them sometimes and that was English coming out of my mouth and um so two murders doesn't seem like a lot in a movie but when it's supposed to be just about that one murder like you said a side story that really didn't affect the end result I don't think of this one. Not really um because they just found out that it was a curse that's what they needed the other murder for right so they can find out that it's a curse that poss that is uh invites the possession into the person, right? So they're trying to create a pattern. Two different people curses I think it ended up being more than that because they started following the clues to figure out um where do these all all these people have uh what do they have in common? Why are they being chosen to be cursed to be possessed? See it sounds stupid saying it cursed to be possessed um sorry I know I'm I'm really shitting on this movie now um I totally lost my train of thought I and I don't know which way you're going I know because I'm shitting on this movie so hard that it just and sends me into different tangents. Oh the rules so they're trying to create a uh pattern here to show us the audience that this is a curse okay then they bring in location because it somehow has to be um you know connected by location as well why does it have to be connected by location because the curse is being brought upon by uh to these people by an object so that means somebody is placing these objects at the people's houses or wherever they're getting cursed right so now we have um those two things but they ended up bringing in other clues without this ridiculous storyline to bring in this extra murder which I think the only reason they needed was for runtime because they I think they really padded this movie actually this movie's a long one it was a lot it was it was there was a lot going on it I didn't know when when to end it or when they could have ended it or wrapped it up or what to change but it was long how many what was the runtime it was almost two hours wow yeah that's why it's just like I think they were just adding on stuff to this movie like for example the rules I keep coming back to the rules because the rules don't make sense how many rules did this thing have it was ridiculous oh oh I forgot I keep wanting to break up this is how ridiculous this movie is to me okay now please correct me if I'm wrong please tell me there was a reason that they had to have uh the husband have a health problem can you imagine somehow no I I think maybe in real life he did I think so but also it it it adds to the you know he's gonna forget his pills but that ended up affecting anything no it didn't just to show that she was carrying his pills for him yeah because she loved him exactly that's so weird like I wanted you to tell me no dahlia actually the reason that and then you know connected to something that I could see um but the whole time I'm thinking like okay so this is going to come into play somehow this is going to come into play somehow and it didn't really now because now looking back at the movie all it did was create another story to add time to this movie because how many different stories do we have going on um you can't forget that we also have the boyfriend girlfriend aspect of this movie yes a lot is a lot going on there's nothing wrong with a movie having a lot going on people's lives and little uh you know uh communities and all that yeah a lot going on but this is a fucking movie I don't care about all this extra stuff just keep it to what we're supposed to be watching about and make it make sense and maybe it was to make me like the characters more but this is supposed to be the third movie this is the third movie in the conjuring series right yes so you don't need to endear him to the audience people already love him that's just to show that he's human I guess I don't know I don't know I'm trying to pull out something but I I can't I can't think of anything just lots of going on see we're not even talking about the fucking possession every time we keep coming back to talk about the possession like the possession uh specifically I keep trying to come back to it I have my notes I have my notes I'm I have rules of the of the um of the possession I'm talking about um how uh the the I I really am trying here I want to stay on the subject of the possession itself and that way I'm not shitting on this movie but I I find that the more I talk the more angry I get that I can't find that thing that's keeping me being like yeah this movie was worth my time and this was an interesting aspect of the movie or the possession itself and I don't even find that because the person who ended up cursing so I thought as it's as this movie keeps going on I'm gonna like oh I'm gonna find out that this person who's cursing everybody to fucking get them possessed it's this is gonna be a really interesting character and we're gonna go down that rabbit hole of what's going on. No.
SPEAKER_00Isn't it just being some generic woman who read her dad's book and became obsessed what was the name even I don't know see and they just kind of throw that together at at one point because they're trying to find out where this altar is because they have to destroy the altar destroys the curse. Destroy the altar destroys the curse how are they going to find it and it just is happens to be coincidentally the father um that they look for to help them with the case it just so happens to be the same father that they go see and then they says father she's saying father and I said father.
SPEAKER_01Alma's talking about a priest and I'm talking about the same priest being a father to the woman who ends up being being the killer yeah well not the killer but yeah she didn't kill anybody this is well I mean ridiculous but this is you know what I mean you know what I mean I I know what you mean I I think nobody knows what the hell is going on with this movie or maybe you do and you could tell me and you can email me and let me know Dahlia you have it all wrong you see it's very obvious this is the way the movie is going and you missed it. No but this is all I'm seeing is little boy gets possessed in the beginning his sister's boyfriend says oh no take me instead and he gets possessed and then this guy ends up committing a murder and tries to get out of murder by saying he was possessed but he's not possessed all the time because apparently this demon can come in and out whenever it wants okay I I'll follow that logic because you know other possession movies do the same thing. Oh but wait a minute the fact that he invited the demon into him doesn't matter because they're being cursed oh a curse that's interesting let's go with that now and then we find out that the woman cursing them is cursing them like I said because her father studied the cult and then we never find out why she was performing this ritual because I didn't even mention it was a ritual going on here. We mentioned that there's an altar but she's she did a ritual to curse so many people that curse invites a demon in but what was the ritual for what was the end result you see what I'm saying here what was the end result of the ritual besides getting people cursed to become possessed what was the end what did she get out of it? Because it wasn't anything cool because what ends up happening at the end of the movie is because she didn't give the demon a soul now she's the soul the demon takes and she didn't seem to like that. So what the fuck was she expecting to get they never said oh she's gonna get this or she's gonna get that or we never saw her her story as far as like what it was that you know I even just give me some conversation or or some flashbacks or something about this woman. But all I saw was that we have no idea why she did this ritual and I guess just because she's evil that's that's no fun. Because we we don't even care that she's evil because we didn't know anything about her she we we weren't getting glimpses of her like being this fantastical evil person throughout the whole thing. All we saw was all the other shit going on and then oh yeah by the way the person who cursed the little boy in the beginning yeah it's this random chick over here do I care at the end of the movie I no I don't I didn't I didn't care I I didn't even know who I was supposed to be rooting for honestly I'm like destroy the altar don't destroy the altar I don't care I was just like so uh I was done with the movie at by that point. But like I said I really did try to latch on to things that I enjoy in movies and every time I tried to be like okay well let me look at this part I don't know even the little boy in the beginning was kind of annoying you know sometimes I can be like oh poor kid he you know something bad happened to him he got possessed no this little boy looks like he deserved to get possessed I don't know well we have it as stories there has to be something you like like I said there were a few a few creepy moments that I liked like I I did I did like the the the case itself I figured that could be a movie they could have made that into a movie the murder that they solved for the police it could have been a short you know that was something um I like it when she was in the the mortuary or the what is it called the morgue the morgue and that they the the occultist lady because I don't know her name whatever she reanimates a corpse that was pretty cool okay all see right there she reanimating corpses I I I both enjoyed the makeup and was also just at that point like I think that was like maybe in the middle of the movie I had already checked out by then though I was like oh this this is kind of cool because it I think the makeup was well done for for that scene um because you know me I love practical effects and all that gowns beautiful gowns but yeah because like I like practical effects and and I thought oh this is this is pretty interesting you know but see I don't even remember that scene she has a name Isla or uh Isla I S L A she has a name so they may have said it in the movie they may have referred to her by name or maybe it's a deleted scene by now we have no idea maybe we should be like watching the director's cut and getting more info for this poor lady that I'm sure this actress was so excited to be cast in the Conjuring series and here I am shitting on the entire movie and saying basically she was and she was she was forgotten she was like just a blip in the movie the character not the actress that's all I have to say I mean unless you yeah unless you can uh convince me that I should give the other movies a chance I'm telling you I loved the first two movies I loved them I d I really did enjoy them they're different they're different they're just different there's no other way to put it um well there's a hundred ways to put it but you know what I mean they're yeah they're definitely worthwhile and you can watch them with just pick one you know you don't need to watch them in order or anything like that.
SPEAKER_00Okay. The franchise itself has like so many movies because you have the Annabelle movies the nun movies and all that but the conjuring movies themselves I enjoy the first and second one a lot and and there's even this just better they're just better I know I feel horrible I feel horrible you know me I don't like to shit on movies this would just really aggravated the shit out of me though um so y'all can tell me should I give the other conjuring movies a chance or are they basically going to aggravate me the same as this one did?
SPEAKER_01I don't know I because I don't know if it was the the Warrens that annoyed me or it was the movie that annoyed me. The Warrens well I'm talking yeah I'm talking about in the storyline or in the conjuring series um so maybe I will like one of the other ones better I could probably give it a chance so that I can give it give them a fair shake.
