I love faces.
SPEAKER_01Hey, I'm Dahlia. And I'm Alma. Welcome to the Gory Deta. It is October. It is Halloween month.
SPEAKER_02Yay. I like I like your jingle for the month of October. It's time for Halloween. It's technically Halloween. Yes, it is.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, basically. It might as well be. The October. I okay. We watch horror movies all year long, obviously. We like to talk about them, just everything, just for fun, for funsies, for doing it just to talk with other people who uh enjoy horror. But I love, I still love October. Because that's when you start seeing like a lot of the movies that they hide, you know, that they hide for some reason for the rest from the rest of the year, they start coming out during this time of year.
SPEAKER_02I too enjoy the lists because I find something new to watch every year, especially because I want to know what other people think is a Halloween movie. You know, does it does it is it something that just happens during the fall? Is it just a movie that you like to watch that you bring out once a year? Oh that type of thing. That's the type of thing that I love to see from people because me, I like to watch the same movies every year around Halloween. Okay. And and so I keep it to and I have more movies because I love Scooby-Doo, so I bust out the Scooby-Doo movies too. I love that. And so I've already watched Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, and um I'm gonna bust out um what was I? I almost said poultry geist. Ah, not poultry geist. I was uh Paranorman, uh Monster House, uh Hope. Oh my god, totally different genres there.
SPEAKER_01What are you talking about?
SPEAKER_02Yes, I know. I don't know why. I thought I was thinking the P and the the first movie that popped out of my head with the P was that. And I'm like, no, no, no, no, no, no, not that one.
SPEAKER_01No, but I I like what you say, that you have you have, I guess, oh, your go-to movies that you're gonna be watching around the holidays. But I do like seeing what other people are going to suggest as well. Or movies that I haven't even watched in a in a long time.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that especially.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Like this month, we are doing ghosts and supernatural stuff. We decided to start with poltergeist, not poltergeist as Alma.
SPEAKER_02There you go. Accidentally. That's probably why it was on my mind.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's why. Remember that movie? Not my cup of tea. No. Great if you love it. That's a movie. It just was not my cup of tea at all. But this is poltergeist. So I'm sorry to disappoint you if you were looking for conversation on that other movie. I didn't even finish watching it. That's how much I couldn't do it. I was like, I can't remember.
SPEAKER_02I don't know if I did. I can't remember. I just remember watching it and not being not liking it. No, no, no doubt.
SPEAKER_01But this one is much better. Yeah, 1982, right? 82? Okay, so it's 89% on rotten tomatoes. That's good. Yeah. I mean seeing the talk about some of the things about it that probably didn't shoot it into the 90th percentile here, but 89, that's really good. 79 with the general audience. So that's 89 with critics. Wow. Yeah. That's incredible. I think so too. IMDB says uh or describes this movie as a family's home, becomes a center of paranormal activity that opens a doorway to the other side with help. They must cross over to get their daughter back.
SPEAKER_02First of all, this was written by Steven Spielberg, Michael Grayson, Mark Victor, directed by Toby Hooper, and it stars Joe Beth Williams as Diane Freeling, it uh Craig T. Nelson as Steve Freeling, their daughters Dana Freeling, played by Dominique Dunn, Caroline Freeling by Heather Rourke Heather O'Rourke and Robbie was played by Oliver Robbins, and Dr. Lesch is played by Beatrice Strait. And those are the main characters, also the person who comes and cleans the home. Zelda Rubinstein as Tangina.
SPEAKER_01Yes. What's great about Poltergeist is that it's set and we start we're starting to see this more now, but at the time it was really cool to set this like in a regular home, suburban neighborhood. Your regular family wasn't a typical haunted house or out uh in the middle of nowhere type of home where creepy things can go on unnoticed from the rest of the world. This was happening in your neighborhood. This was happening next door. This was happening with just your, well, I guess they're kind of a regular family. This is like, I have some things to say about how interesting looking back at it now. They really were very interesting. The mom, they say her age is 32 and she has a 16-year-old daughter, which I roared over. I was like, wait a minute, did I how did I not catch this the first few times that I watched this? I thought that was great. There was more going on in this family than we know. Uh, we have the mom who just basically ignores her daughter getting accosted by the construction workers and laughs it off. That's oh yeah, she just laughed it off. Yeah. She took care of herself.
SPEAKER_02There you go.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah, exactly. But that's totally not normal. But, anyways, all of this was played out to be the normal kind of family next door and everything. And that's why when this is it a haunting, what is it? It's, you know, poltergeist haunting ghosts, all that stuff. When it starts going down in the house, that's what makes it creepy because you don't expect it to happen.
SPEAKER_02This is something new, something different. I like the way that if you were back then you were hearing about poltergeist for the first time and um the differences between that, ghosts, and hauntings, because they get really into it uh discussing it with um Dr. Lesh, the one who shows up after Caroline disappears. But it's something new, and you start hearing about poltergeist, and then we all started looking it up. I remember looking up poltergeist in I did too.
SPEAKER_01I remember the books. I I looked up and I was learning the different exactly encyclopedias. I can't believe you said that.
SPEAKER_02But you know, we were very, very young when we watched this, and you know, I wasn't old enough to watch it when it first came out, but when I eventually watched it, this movie was so, so just scary to me. I thought it was scary, the ghosts and um the whole haunting of the house, everything that was new. It starts off with just a mild creepiness of the um of the little girl, uh Carol Ann talking to the television set and in the white noise of the television during the static time. And I remember static time back back in the day when the television was just done being television for the day, it just went staticky. And that was what Caroline was talking about, and they were just catching her talking to the television screen, not thinking anything of it. And me, I was like, oh my gosh, listening to static, trying to see if I could hear anything.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, so we hit we're we're in the suburbs. We're your your typical American 80s family, you got cute little kids. You got a dog. Oh my god, I forgot we got a cute dog. Oh yes. The dog is fine, the whole movie. Yes. Everything starts off kind of fun. We're having, I don't know, mom was way overjoyed to see her daughter get beamed across the floor by some unknown force. She thought that was great. But then again, she did also think that it was great for her 16-year-old daughter to be verbally accosted by the construction workers out there. So I don't know. I'm starting to wonder about this, mama.
SPEAKER_02Because she was so young and free, and you know, she was only 32. They don't say how old Craig T. Nelson is in this. They do not, do they? So no.
SPEAKER_01He looks older. And it's not through any fault of his own. That's just what the 80s did to you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it makes it makes age a mystery sometimes.
SPEAKER_01It does, it really does. She, okay, so he comes home, Craig T. Nelson comes home. What's going on? Mom shows him all the cool stuff that's going on with little Carol Ann being beamed across the floor, look at what's happening to the chair. And they think this is great. They think not, oh, maybe something's going on here, and we should hightail it out of here. Of course not. Otherwise, we wouldn't have a movie.
SPEAKER_02So no, they you're right. They both are very happy and silly about it. They're laughing, they're giggling about it. They go next door and they ask them if they're experiencing anything new in their home or if they're getting um anything weird happening, and they're just standing there giggling about it. And they're forgotten. They were probably high. Oh, yeah, I forgot about that. Yes, they do. They do get high in the movie too, because yeah, that's what they did back then. And now then.
SPEAKER_01I love it. No, but it's funny because you're I'm over here talking about how I didn't really pick up on all this shit when I was little. I, you know, 32-year-old mom to 16-year-old daughter, uh, the getting high in the house around the kids. It's just great. Yes. They get interrupted to pick up on this.
SPEAKER_02Didn't think it was a big deal or anything. The little boy walks in on them and they just kind of stop smoking. But yeah, that was kind of cool. They were just kind of a cool laid-back family.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And that's probably why the the whole abduction, and then you see them when they're on the complete opposite afterwards. So the I keep calling it an abduction because I don't know what else you would call that. Caroline. It's an abduction. It's a ghostly abduction. Abducted into the other side. And and I always picture, like, try to picture like what is she doing over there? Just running around, chilling, you know, talking to the ghosty people, you know. Hey, what's up? You know?
SPEAKER_01Well, she had to have been having some times that were not totally stressful because she doesn't always come to them through the through the television. That's how she communicates with her family when she's on the other side through the television and the static. So sometimes they're calling for her and she's not coming to talk to them. But probably maybe she was having fun with all the other ghosties, because there's a whole bunch of ghosts. Yes, there are we have a house that's built on, it's not just that house, though. That's what I don't get. It's not just that house.
SPEAKER_02I always try to rationalize why is it just their house that's being haunted. Well, we don't know if the other homes are having any little things moving around. We don't we don't know that. However, their home seems to be the central location for it. And I think it was because of the fact that they mentioned several times that Steve he is responsible for over 40% of those homes being sold. He had nothing to do with the homes being built where it was a cemetery or anything like that. In fact, he didn't know much about what was happening before selling these homes. But we think that I think that this punishment came about because he's responsible for so many people moving into the neighborhood and not knowing anything about the neighborhood itself before. And so that's just my my theory.
SPEAKER_01I like that. I like that. Um they are looking for someone to uh lash out to, and since he's living right there where they can get their energy all riled up, they go for it. Their homes, at least we know it's their home, is built on a graveyard uh or cemetery, whatever you want to call it. The when they came in and bought up all the land, there was uh some cemeteries there, because they do mention another one close by that they're gonna start building in that area as well. But what they did was they they didn't move the bodies. Remember how he yells at him?
SPEAKER_02Yep, that was the final the final reveal was that they never moved any of the bodies, and that was so messed up because they only moved the headstones. The headstones. There you go. I think I said that right.
SPEAKER_01That is so evil. Uh yeah, it would have cost a lot of money, but I mean that's ew. Ew. They still made a lot of money. That that was even if you d yeah. Well, even if you don't believe in ghosts, it's just ew. That's so rude. That's like, I'm just gonna build this house on top of you. What does it yeah? They show all the people. Well, they don't show all the people, but they show like ghostly little glimpses of the people that were buried there. And it looked like some of them would have ties to the local area somehow. So I don't know, I that I never got that either. Like, how did these people get how did the cemetery get lost? Surely somebody would have raised a ruckus of some sort. Like, hey, that's a cemetery there. What are you doing?
SPEAKER_02Well, especially because at one point when um through the other side all that jewelry and and little trinkets fell through, they mentioned that some things were old as two years and some were older than a hundred years old. So somebody recent had their things disturbed, you know, and nobody cared. I guess not. They're moving old grandpa. Oh well.
SPEAKER_01I guess yeah, I guess you believe them. They uh okay, so it turns from a fun little haunting for the parents to Carol Ann being abducted to the other side. And of course we have our 16-year-old daughter, and however old the little boy is, they don't they I mean, the boy gets picked on. I don't think I remember the daughter ever getting picked on, did she?
SPEAKER_02No, no, she didn't.
SPEAKER_01Okay. She did leave the house a lot. She has friends, so she left the house. She would say that she was going off to her friend's house. I can't remember her.
SPEAKER_02Friend's house. She was popular, I'm guessing, because she was always at somewhere, and during the whole time she kept leaving and had places to go, and she didn't need to be at the house if she didn't want to be. She was gonna be somewhere. Even the joke about her knowing where the hotel was because she had been there before.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god. And then and then there's this part where they have to send the little boy to go be with grandma, and it's the most fucking hilarious thing because they stand way over near the porch and they watch him, they have this long drive and this long, this big yard, and they watch him walk all the way across, all the way to the car, to the taxi. He walks into the taxi. This is a taxi, they send him off by himself. He turns around, he's looking at his parents all pissed, and they're just like, they're still, they don't even bother to walk over to him or walk with him or kiss him and hug him or he chucks his suitcase into the taxi too, and then and then he leaves the door open for the dog to come and then just drives off.
SPEAKER_02They sent their kid off in a taxi with the dog.
SPEAKER_01They didn't even bother to walk into the car and hug him.
SPEAKER_02You know, it's somewhere far because if it was close by, the grandma would have been by the house. And so, you know, the fact that he had to take a taxicab there meant he was stuck with some random stranger in a car Ubering over to grandma's house.
SPEAKER_01It was great. Um, so but they they have them go off other places so they don't get picked on at well, the little boy does. He gets fucked with by the tree, which used to scare the shit out of me when I was little.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah, that tree. Like, first of all, why did they even keep that tree in that yard? Because the house was all brand new. They were building a pool, and then you had this gnarly old-looking dead tree. And I'm not for like just moving trees and stuff like that. I love trees. I mean, I think a lot of neighborhoods would be better if they didn't mow down all the trees so that they could, you know, but you know, we always thinking about storms and stuff like that. But that whole tree was like the cartoon tree of nightmares because of the way that it looked. It was so gnarly and it was scary. And for some reason, it was kept there in their yard of all trees so that it what it could come take Robbie in the middle of the night. That was scary. It was eating him whole, it was swallowing him up.
SPEAKER_01It absolutely did. And what I love about it is that he's supposedly scared of it, but he was all fucking climbing on it in the beginning of the movie. He's all climbing it and playing on it, and then he's like, but that tree scares me. Then why the fuck were you on it? It probably got pissed off. It's like, what are you doing? Playing on me. I'm dead already. So, yeah, so he gets fucked with by the by that and the clown. Another thing that scared me. I love the clown.
SPEAKER_02I love that clown so much. And when I was a kid, I remember being scared of it. Even it was just the creepiest looking. Why did they have a clown the size of a kid they put in the room?
SPEAKER_01It was the size of him. It didn't make sense. I was like, why is it there? Okay. So many things wrong. So many things wrong with this. Yes, it's sitting in the chair. Why is it just sitting in the chair? He's scared of it, so why is it even there? So then I guess it's Carol Ann's toy. But why would why would they do that? Why would they allow her have to have a clown in a chair when it obviously scares the little boy? And and I'm all for sharing rooms. Don't get me wrong. Sharing rooms when you have to. I totally get it. We grew up sharing rooms. Um, that's not the part that bothers me. The part that bothers me is that they're sharing a room when dad works for the company that builds the home. So are you telling me he couldn't get a house with separate rooms for everybody? He had to have the little boy and girl share the room. That made no sense.
SPEAKER_02He's making money. He's making money. He even even his boss said. Should have made you a partner three years ago. Yeah. Uh they've been is living in the established neighborhood for a while. Not a while, but you know, some few years at least. A few years. So why did he get picked to live right in the middle of the neighborhood with only two other extra bedrooms? Yeah, that is weird. Especially because he's making them bank.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And then we have, okay, so we have them uh her having a clown in the in the room that scares the shit out of him. The clown ends up getting him. And not only does it it's sorry, it comes, they use it again. They bring it back. Oh, let's put it back in the fucking room. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_02I'm not even sure like he's scared of it. It didn't like comes back.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. Here you go, right in the chair again. Well, I don't think it gets him at first. It gets him the second time that they have the huge event happen at their house. Either way, it's like, why is it there?
SPEAKER_01They they made a sure, they made a sure. They made a point to put it in the chair again after everything had gotten messed up. It's like they put the room back together and put the fucking clown in the chair again.
SPEAKER_02Just make sure our clown is in the chair for Robbie. And if it's her clown, why isn't it closer to her? Why is it clear across the room? I don't think it's either of their clowns. I think that they thought it was a cute thing to put in the room. Like remember the way that our sister had clowns put up for her daughter's nursery room. Some people like the clowns. And I like them now. I like them now, but I wouldn't have liked them when I was a kid like that. That's scary to me. Clowns were were not the coolest thing. They were, they were definitely the reason that I had nightmares sometimes. I have that clown now. And it's funny because I've been wanting the full size one, but I found a little one and I got the little little little version of it. And so I think he's absolutely darling. But in the movie, yeah, I think he's creepy and all that kind of stuff. But I've obviously I grew out of it, you know? And um because now I I really like clowns. I love the killer clowns, I love that clown. Oh, that's right. You do. I forgot. But but no, but you like scary clowns. You don't like record clowns. Oh, that's true. I'm not liking cute darling little bozo the clown or anything. We still used to watch Bozo the clown. I don't remember him, but I just know of him. He's like a famous clown. So that way I know that. But he was a good one. He was a good go, a good, good guy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01The okay, so we have Carol Ann on the other side. Carol Ann, I love saying her name. It's such a beautiful name that they chose for her. Can you imagine if they had named her something else? Like I know, no offense, but like Melinda.
SPEAKER_03Beatrice.
SPEAKER_01Come on, Melinda, you can do it. Nothing wrong with those names. It just wouldn't sound right. It's not the same thing.
SPEAKER_02Not at all. They're not, they're not the moment.
SPEAKER_01And we have uh, how do you say her name, Tangina? Yes, Tangina. She uh, I love her, I love her character. She comes in and she tells us all the lore, what's going down. Because we have an idea, yeah, but when she tells us everything that's going on in her voice, in that beautiful voice of hers, it's just like it sucks you into the story, and it's just like, oh, if this wasn't so fucking scary going on right now, I would ask you to tell me more.
SPEAKER_02Uh-huh. I do love the way she comes in, very commanding, very telling of them. And there's no question that what she's saying is true or not. Um, just I know that that Steve wasn't really believing of her because of the fact that she came in so matter-of-factly stating everything that she's saying. But everybody else is like, no, this is this is true. This is what she's gonna do. And we're but they don't question her at all because they end up doing exactly what she says so that they can clean the house. Yep. They she even says that she's never done it before with the whole rope thing going into the other plane, right? But yet they still set it up and they still listen to her and they still do everything that she says.
SPEAKER_01And it was great because she admitted it. She's just like, first time, let's do it. All right, let's do it. Because she does have a very commanding presence. She told them a story that makes sense, and it made sense to me when she's telling it to me. And they this is the part where I always remember the uh when they come out, when they get Carol Ann, they get the rope, they go in there, mom comes out with her, they have end up having to put her in the bathtub, or both of them in the bathtub. I always thought that was interesting to wipe off all the afterbirth off of them and everything like that. I always was grossed out by this scene as a child because they were covered in all this bloody mucusy goo. And now as an adult, I just look at it like if they and I still get grossed out because it's like, ew, that they're like covered in afterbirth. It always just looks like because that's what they're trying to do. They're wiping it off from the yeah, they're they're wiping it off of the mouth and the face. That's what you do to babies. You want to make sure that you get all the gunk out from the nose and the mouth. The afterbirth. Well, yeah. I had kids. It's not like, you know, speaking ill of the birth or anything like that. No, but it's gross. But that Teresa's is always gross to me out. But what I'm trying to get at is the practical effects they're doing in this movie. Fun. Remember the face scene when he's peeling his face off?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I love that. I love that beautiful steak moving across the tape. First of all, who goes into someone else's home and they say make yourself at home, pulls a steak out of the fridge to make in the middle of the night? Nobody does that. But anyway, so he gets his steak out and the way that it inches across the countertop and then all the maggots and everything pops out is so disgusting. It's so gross. I love it. But at the same time, I'm like, he just pulls it out of there. He's like, hmm, I'm gonna eat this steak.
SPEAKER_01That's why it had that's why his face had to get peeled off to teach him a lesson. Don't go getting shit down.
SPEAKER_02Yep. That steak was for next steak dinner. They were they were gonna make it as a special part of a dinner to welcome them into their home. But now they don't have the steak because he decided to go do that, and now it's all full of maggots on the floor.
SPEAKER_01But that scene scared the shit out of me when I was little. Obviously, not so much now, but the nostalgia effect when I'm watching it and getting into like that me as a little kid seeing this man peel his face off horrified me. It fucking horrified me. And just the thought of it now, even though I just saw the movie again, even though I know how kind of ridiculous it looks now, I'm still scared because it scared me and it's practical effects, and I love practical effects.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's gooey and gross. It's it's nice. I love it. Chunky. It's chunky. The way that they peel this face off and then drops into the sink. I love that. I just think that that that is the coolest thing ever. Just uh doing that. And um the way that they use like the animation for the ghosts and stuff like that. I love that. It all looks really, really, really cool. And I think it I think it holds up really well. I think it looks, yeah, it looks really pretty, especially the when they showed all those ghosts coming down the staircase and moving across the TV screen. Um, and the camera, the way it was following it and everything. I thought that was awesome. Those are those are some special parts of the movie that are just classic.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. The monster, ghost monster poltergeist thing that's in front of the door when mom comes over to try to get. I think it's when Carolina's in there. Or I can't remember what she's saying. They're both in there.
SPEAKER_02I think it's when they're both in there. They're trapped in there, and that thing stands in front of the door.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_02Oh, with the lanky arms and just outstretched and just huge, and this, yeah, that's pretty cool.
SPEAKER_01I love that too. One of my favorite, one of my favorite scenes in not just that movie, but in all movies, because that still holds up, like you said. It's still it and it has the ethereal, creepy factor going on, but it's also so pretty. It's just so pretty, you can't help but just enjoy looking at it. Like some things don't age well, but that does. When I watched that uh a few nights ago again, I was looking, I was like, yeah, that still looks good. That still looks good. Face peeling off, eh. Still fun. But the the ghosts and the and the way they do it. And then we have, I saw a meme the other day that it was just so fucking funny. It just happened to be, it's like my phone knows what I'm thinking. You know how we joke about that? Like, oh because you'll be thinking something and then you'll like open up your phone and it'll have like an advertisement for it or something like that. Well, the other day I saw a meme that was talking about practical effects in horror movies, and it had the poltergeist swimming pool scene with when she's in there and it has the skeletons around her, and it said something like, Oh, the practical effects used to be insane back in the day, and then it's just like that's the joke because those were real skeletons in the fucking pool.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah, weren't they supposed to be real skeletons? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because it was cheaper to have real skeletons in the fake ones. Oh I didn't know supposedly, supposedly, I don't know, maybe they got a good deal or something, but that's that's the lore.
SPEAKER_02Oh that's cool. I think that's cool. Yeah, and that's gross. It looks so sick in there being in the pool, not being able to get out. That's so crazy the way she was stuck in there and trying to climb out just over and over again. That's one of my one of my one of my fears is getting stuck like that somewhere and trying to climb out and not being able to. But yeah, that part of the movie was great.
SPEAKER_01They have it ugh. So in this part, she's screaming bloody murder outside. I don't know why it took the neighbors so long to come. I have no idea.
SPEAKER_02I know, because it's like that's the only house that's right there and they could hear each other, they could hear each other's TVs. Yeah, they could they could hear each other.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. They they made a point of showing how close the houses were in the beginning of the movie because, like you just said, they could they were in arguments about each other's TV, they could come out and talk to each other about it. They were using remotes on each other's TVs, so obviously they're really close, but yeah, thunderstorms can be loud, but it would not that fucking loud. Give me a fucking break. It was just storming here the other day, and I I could hear shit that was going on outside. If somebody's screaming their head off in their backyard next door, I'm gonna hear that I think they just ignored her because they didn't want to go over because they're like, uh they keep just yeah.
SPEAKER_02I think I think that's it. They didn't like each other. They're no, they weren't gonna be coming out. They think their neighbors are crazy. They come over here asking if weird stuff is moving around. They find out about TV and all that stuff, but they ended up helping her out of there. Do they help her out?
SPEAKER_01I don't know if they actually helped her out or if they just put an umbrella over her as she crawled out. I have no idea. Because they showed up, the neighbors showed up with their umbrella.
SPEAKER_02But then they didn't help. Yeah, but then they didn't help with anything about it.
SPEAKER_01Nothing happened beyond that. They just they just wanted to remind us, hey, there are neighbors here. They are hearing shit that's going on. They all start doing anything about it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and then that's when the neighbors start coming out and watching the house, but nobody's really doing anything. Nope. They're not doing anything, they're just watching the house as it starts to implode. And um everybody screams their head off, and everybody's rushing outside, and everybody's trying, and they're trying to leave, but all the neighbors, they're standing around trying to watch. Yep. So, yeah, they're there for the show. They didn't know.
SPEAKER_01I was gonna say it's a pretty good show. It's a it's a pretty good light show. From the outside, you have all the lights going out, beaming out the iconic scene of the house all lit up. From I remember when I was little, I was thinking it was the T Yeah, I thought it was from the TV, but obviously it's not. It's from the energy of the ghosts or the pentagists. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It was the ghosties, the other side peeking through, shining through the veil.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there you go. Yep. And so that, yeah, rem it stops raining. It's it stops because that's it's not raining anymore when they take off, I don't think. Daughter shows up from her f Diane, I think that's her name, shows up from her friend's house because it's like, where was she? Oh, yeah, she was at her friend's house. She shows up at that moment. I don't know why. I think they called her or something. I don't remember. It was a lot going on at the end there. The daughter? Yeah.
SPEAKER_02She was expected back. She was only going out. She said she'd be back for the night because they had already planned on going to stay the night somewhere else. She said to put them to bed and if they if he hadn't been back yet. But when the father shows up, he was done for the night. And then they were supposed to go to the holiday inn. They already knew that they were supposed to go there. So the daughter was just showing up at a perfect time.
SPEAKER_01Okay, gotcha. See, I've I've seen this movie a lot of times. I miss I miss things. I just remember th thinking it was hilarious that she just showed up right on time to leave and it was a boyfriend. They don't show who it has that drove her. I assumed it was a boyfriend, but they don't show us. It could be just a regular friend sitting there, but I always assumed it was a boyfriend because the way they drove off. I don't know. It just I always found it.
SPEAKER_02I don't know what the hell's going on here, but no. I'm done with you. No, hey, do you want to keep driving? Um I don't think you should go in there. No, nothing. Just bye, see you later. Yeah. And then that then that that happens. That that's what happened. The house implodes and and then they go off to the hotel and not just any hotel. It's the holiday. And they push the TV out, which was funny as hell at the time. It was.
SPEAKER_01That was hilarious at the time. If you don't think it's funny now, well, we did back in the day.
SPEAKER_02Yes, back in the day, it was hilarious because it was just the way he rolled it outside and it was like fuck it. He's I was like, you're gonna get charged for that TV because it's running. For real.
SPEAKER_01We were talking about how because that holiday in is set up like a motel. Remember motels? Yes, they still exist, but we used to stay at motels. You you couldn't pay me money to stay in a motel today. No, not gonna stay in those things. We put in our time, it's okay. Yeah, we already we already did that, been there, done that, we're done. Well, at least I am. And um, but that holiday in is like a was like a motel. I didn't know they used to be like that. And I don't Yeah. And that's how it ends. They they're in the hotel with no TV, and there you go.
SPEAKER_02And nothing. And nothing. They have no possessions with them, they have nothing with them. Zero. It's a good thing that they were already packing up because uh the boxes and everything that got piled off. They still have quite a bit of stuff in their house though.
SPEAKER_01So they had whole ass beds set up and um it there was places for them to sit down. So maybe just their like the shit that yeah, the shit that you put in, like the cut behind the cupboards and on the shelves. Maybe all that crap was the stuff that was put away and taken away. But I just remember thinking, like, why are their beds still fucking out and made? I remember like they could sleep on the floor in a sleeping bag. Why wasn't that shit shipped off already? Because all the other shit was getting shipped off. I didn't get that. I think way too much about these little things that don't matter, but it was just like, I just remember thinking, like, you know, like why the fuck are there beds made? That shit should be gone already. I think about like when I move, when I move, everything's done so that it's gone. It's I'm not leaving that shit out. Can you you know how hard it is to move? It sucks. Get it done. Why are you doing it in stages? You hear my dog? Even he agrees with me. He's like, get that out of my mouth. Get that shit out.
SPEAKER_02So, poltergeist, scary today? No, not unfortunately, not for me. I think I've seen it way too many times. If it would been like the first time watch, even then, I'd it's just you know, I'm just older. And so it just doesn't hit the same way.
SPEAKER_01Do you think it's because you're you say older, or do you think it's because you've seen a lot of uh horror, scary ghost movies? You've seen this movie. Well, I I do you think that could have anything to do with it, or do you just think it's this movie is of its time? It's still fun today, but at it's more scary in its time.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's more fun today. It was scary in its time. I just think it's and now it's a different time period. And I just I don't think anything else had an effect on me, um, other than the fact that I'm just older now and it's just you know, seeing it, it's more nostalgic. Um it's still an incredible watch. I think that there's so much to enjoy watching it still and having a good time, but I'm having a good time now instead of being scared.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. And I love having that memory of being scared, which makes it great. So even if I'm not walking away scared, I'm still like, oh man, that scared the shit out of me. I love that feeling. At that time, I think it was in '82, I said, they were really ramping up on making kids be creepy and trying to scare you. Oh, yeah. And this way it was a little bit different because she was wholly innocent, but they used her as the thing to fucking like be the she wasn't actually a conduit, but kind of be that that tether for you to be scared. So it's like, ah, I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Um and she was especially the way they had her t talking to the ghost through the television set and and staying up late and and being the one that was shooting across the floor and everything like that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that for sure. I loved hearing just her side of the conversation when she's talking to it, and you just hear her side of the conversation, like her answering the questions and shit. I was like, what? Oh god, what is she hearing? It's like what voice was she hearing that made her think that's okay to talk to this complete stranger in the TV that I can't even see? Stranger danger? Nah. Best effect. Do you have uh I I I think we kind of talked about this. I'm gonna go through and kind of ask a few questions. Best effect in this movie. For me, it was definitely when that thing was standing outside of the door, when mom was trying to go in. I don't even know, feathery kind of ghostly looking thing with its arms and its legs all extended and everything. That's that's my favorite.
SPEAKER_02I think I think two things for me stood out that I really appreciate, and that was when the ghosts are descending the stairs. Yeah. I thought that one looked you know know ethereal it looked it looked um it just yeah it was just a a wonderful scene i i liked watching it it mesmerizing me and then um i like the steak moving across the kitchen counter because it was gross and because you could just imagine it's a bloody steak that yeah just was in the refrigerator just being slapped on the countertop and just oozing its way across the top and then just pulsating and chopping up and just pushing itself through and everything like that. I thought that was cool. I I still think it's cool. It is uh most 1980s thing coming out of this movie um definitely for me it would be the the not just the static ETV but the national anthem playing right before it went to static I love that remember that wouldn't so for those of y'all who are not in the know this was great at the end of the day a channel would just stop would just stop it wouldn't have any more shows on it and when it stopped having its shows let's say it was at midnight what would happen was right before it went to static they would play the national anthem for what reason I have no idea it was just that's when you knew the channel was saying goodbye yeah it was the national anthem right yeah it was the national anthem yeah national anthem it would fucking play the national anthem for fun and then if you were awake you would stand up and sing along and then nothing else to do shut the f up I'm gonna go with the same I think the same thing I think that was the coolest thing of the 80s um the way the TV the the whole TV setup the remote control for the TV uh the clicking sound um the the toys the the clothing the the style of it it's it's just it's just so nostalgic they weren't trying anything they were just being in the 80s and yes thank you they weren't they weren't trying they weren't you didn't see them wearing the latest fashions like a lot of movies they're really trying to make people look like you know the stylish yeah no this was just them being them it was going everything was going into the the story and the effects and all of that to make it to make it great who made there's always somebody in the in the household in the haunting that you didn't make the right decisions that led to it going further than it should have like in the movies that we watched last month when we were talking about possession we had you know um you know we had that can you point to anybody in this movie that where you're like okay it's because of them or if they had just well yeah the the parents because like most people will say if you start see encountering some shit moving around your house if you start seeing things moving around by themselves or you see strange things happening the electricity there was a lot of little things happening before like Caroline talking to the TV screen you nope out you leave or something maybe that would have been the time to call the paranormal investigators but not after something even bigger happens because the chairs moving around that was that was pretty huge you know the fact that you can mark the spot where something could get sucked in and flies you across the floor yeah um I think yeah I think the the parents should have noped the fuck out of that house. Yeah and I don't know how quickly you could have done it but I wouldn't have found any of it funny or silly. I would have found it all scary.
SPEAKER_01Well that's the other thing too so would you so you wouldn't have stayed my next question was would you have stayed after the first thing that happened you're probably you probably wouldn't a few things a few a few little things you can that you can chalk up to oh that's just electricity messing up but the chairs the chairs moving and Caroline consistently talking to the static on the television set was too much was too much yeah okay so that was Poltergeys there are oh my god how many of them I forgot because the reason I don't remember how many there are is because I didn't watch them I watched this one and I I I watched this one I've watched this one several times over the years but I haven't watched the other ones there's three of them plus the remake the remake I was gonna mention that that's what I was gonna talk about I'm not gonna get into it other than the fact that a remake exists and I saw the trailer and I was like what the hell is this? I never watched it did you watch it? No all I did was watch the trailer and the trailer told me this is not a good idea it just didn't look good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah I don't remember I just know that I never was interested in watching it because I don't get the remake sometimes sometimes I'm just like I don't get the point of it so I'm not gonna watch it.
