Hey, I'm Dahlia, and I'm Alma. Welcome to the Gory Details podcast, where we discuss horror from every angle. We break it down with humor, sarcasm, and curiosity, looking at what scares and excites us most, what gets ignored, and the people shaping the genre right now. Okay, Alma. So this month we're discussing ghosts of supernatural, all that good stuff for October, because October is Halloween month, right? So we chose the ring to discuss. This is the American version. Was that a disappointment to hear when I said the American version?
SPEAKER_00No, no, it was just different. And I think that's why I liked it because it was different. I figured the go-to would have been just to pick up the original, but to pick the remake, I think, is something a little different and a little bit more exciting.
SPEAKER_02Okay, okay. So, yeah, so we decided to talk about the ring this week. And yeah, like I said, it's the American version 2002. I'm just gonna get right into it so we can start discussing it. The ring, 72% on rotten tomatoes. 72% critic rating. Not surprisingly, or surprisingly, 48% from audience. Wow. General audience, sorry. That's to me, that feels like a big difference. That is. Okay, I kind of like that you said that. It's like people probably are either loving it or not. Or not in this case, because it is 48%. I need to start. No, I don't know if I should do that. I was thinking of like starting to like share a couple of little quips from reviews that people share on uh uh The Rotten The Rotten Tomatoes. What's wrong with me today? Just so that people understand, when we record, we record in the evening after we've both been, we've both had a day. We've both had a day.
SPEAKER_00And yeah, for you mostly it's been a day.
SPEAKER_02So by the time I get to talk about, I'm excited to talk about our movie, but my brain is just like, can you keep up, Dahlia? Can you keep up with your thoughts? The thoughts in my mouth don't always match up. So let me just get right into it. IMDB, a journalist must investigate a mysterious videotape, which she which seems to cause the death of anyone one week to the day after they view it. This is, oh, I was about to start talking about who's in it. That's not my job. That's my beautiful sister Alma's job. Who's in this, who wrote it, who directed it, all that good stuff.
SPEAKER_00Gore Verbinski directed this. Aaron Kruger, Koji Suzuki, and Hiroshi Takahashi are the writers credited for this. Um Naomi Watts is stars as Rachel. Um Martin Henderson plays Noah. Brian Cox plays Richard Morgan. David Dorfman is little Aiden in the movie, which always kind of surprised me because when I first saw it, I thought he looked like a Colkin. Um and well, a few other people. Yeah, he did. He did.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so quick intro here. Um we have this mysterious video tape. You people know, even if you haven't seen the movie, you know what this movie's about. We have this little ghost. This is where I might have messed up. I I was thinking this was more along the ghost, you know, side of movies. I don't know. Would you call this a ghost? What would you call her? Can we?
SPEAKER_00Well, she is a ghost. She is. Uh I always thought she was a ghost because she's still haunting everybody. And yeah, she made this videotape after she died. So I figured she was a person with supernatural powers. Uh-huh. And when she passed on, those supernatural powers kept existing. And so she's like a uh ghost squared. I like that.
SPEAKER_02She's a ghost squared. So she also, we also have the benefit in this movie of discussing a cursed object, kind of, because we're talking about a video, a videotape. Um it's actually the movie, I guess you could say, is the curse. She, her name is Samara, right? Or am I thinking of her name is her name, right? Samara. Yeah. So she is a ghost. I guess we're gonna go ahead. I'm gonna go ahead and start calling her a ghost. Because when I was thinking about it, I was like, can I call her a ghost? Yeah, we're gonna go ahead and do that. She isn't confined while she is connected to the tape that people are watching. She has the added benefit of being able to go wherever the person is that is being haunted, it's cursed. So she's not just like at her homestead where she was killed. She gets to follow you wherever it is that you're gonna be when that seven days comes through for you. So that's I don't know, that that's it's kind of cool for her, I guess, because she just gets to bounce around wherever she wants and gets to haunt whoever she wants. Well, it doesn't get to haunt whoever she wants, but it's not just one locale. The the blue filter on this movie I could not stop laughing. Because I remember when a lot of these movies um this was 2002. So they were doing this weird filter on movies to kind of like if you have this filter, it's supposed to be a scary movie. And boy, did they go all in. This filter was very, very I don't know, I thought it was funny.
SPEAKER_00It's interesting. Oh yeah, definitely, definitely. Um in the in the trivia though, it says that the color that they chose was green. See the movie is tinged green.
SPEAKER_02This is very interesting that you mentioned that because I have I get made fun of by my family because I see blue and green differently than they do. So I guess this right here is showing that I did too again, because I see a blue filter.
SPEAKER_01I see blue. But okay, it's green. It's I just now I feel like blue, but I don't think it's blue.
SPEAKER_02No, if it says it's green, then it's green. I bought a present for a coworker of mine recently, and um it was for her retirement, and it was this really pretty wind chime, and I just fell in love with it, and especially because she said her favorite color was green. So I bought her a green wind chime.
SPEAKER_01I gave it to her. Guess what? It was actually blue.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think you have a little bit of colorblindness, maybe blue green colorblindness.
SPEAKER_02Because I was looking at her, I'm like, I bought a green wind chime. I mean, uh, yeah, I bought a green wind chime. She's like, I'm sorry, but it's blue. Like, okay. Seems to like it. She still liked it. But so either way, this filter is very much of its time, and I got a nice giggle out of it because it just threw me off. Uh it's even though it's not my favorite movie, I've watched it several times. It's one of those movies when it's on, I'll watch it. You know?
SPEAKER_00So it'd been a while since the last time I had watched it, but um I remember being a a bigger fan of the original and then waiting to see the remake. Like I didn't see it at the theater or anything. So I've only seen it a couple of times. I think I've only watched it twice. I don't think I've seen it more than that.
SPEAKER_02Well, for some it I for someone who who does doesn't put this on the top of her her list, uh top list of of movies to watch, I've I've watched it several times, and so that the math doesn't make sense or the logic doesn't make sense for me. Rachel is the name of Naomi Watts' character. She's an investigative journalist reporter.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And she starts investigating the death. Well, yeah, I guess you could say it that's how it starts. She starts investigating the death of her niece, which is her sister's daughter. I'm guessing that's her sister. Do we ever say yes? Okay. All right. I didn't know if we actually ever said that.
SPEAKER_00But she was a blonde white woman too, so I just assumed that that was her same. Same. Um and then because she was helping her with the dishes and stuff, and I I just assumed that they were like distant, just the way that her she is with her own son, you know. Thank you.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god, because that's literally what I was gonna about to start talking about. Okay, so let's just set it up real quick. Her niece, uh Rachel's niece, died unexpectedly in a very weird way. Obviously, we all know that she watched the video seven days later, she dies from this curse. Whatever. Yes.
SPEAKER_00Very good intro.
SPEAKER_02I like the intro with this happening in it. Well, it's iconic. It's it's fun, even though, you know, whatever, it's the remake, it's still fun. It's a fun. We got oh gosh, I can't remember her name. I used to watch her on that show. Oh well.
SPEAKER_00Oh, the character the character, the the actress. Oh, I can't remember.
SPEAKER_02Um, I guess I could look it up, but go ahead. No, don't worry about it. Um, so you're gonna hear my dog in the background. The little boy, her son, Rachel, was very good friends with his cousin. She was a teenager. He's they say his age, but I'm gonna guess maybe 10 years old. And he kind of saw her death. I don't know, he foretold her death, or I don't know if he actually knew she was gonna die, but he started drawing creepy drawings of death before she passed away.
SPEAKER_00But you could claim it was supernatural that he he was doing that beforehand, but also uh, and her name is Amber Tamlin, uh, Katie the cousin, um she was telling him about it. She told him that she had seven days to live, that she didn't have very long to live. So he could have been drawing those drawings just because of the fact that the cousin had said that and then had nothing to do with. But in the original, in the original, he has supernatural powers. Like he can see that. But this one, it kind of chalks it up to he could be or he couldn't.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00More ambiguous.
SPEAKER_02But I did want to bring up the reason I'm I'm trying to paint a little story here, and I'm not doing a very good job of it. Basically, what I'm trying to get at is that he looked up to his cousin, it looks like it. They got along well, the cousins. He's seeing that she's gonna die. He's obviously upset by it, all this stuff. They're close, the cousins. When we have, you mentioned the scene at the funeral or the wake or whatever. I don't know what those things are called. Um, when you get together at the house after someone's died, the sister and Rachel's character, when they're talking, you see and you get an idea that the cousins are close. But I didn't get that from the sisters. They were talking as though they haven't talked since the day or that she found out that her niece had died. There was just something odd about that conversation, the way she was talking to her, asking her questions. I'm like, are these people even close? Yeah. Has she even been there for her sister? I'm just like, but you brought up a very good point. You said she's not close with her own son. So if she's not close with her own son, why would she be close with her sister? Maybe she's not. Not that she has to be, but I just I just found that kind of interesting, the conversation that we're having. But regardless of whether she is close with her sister or not, she goes on to uh investigate her niece's death because we find out that it had to do with this tape. She goes and finds the tape and she fucking watches it. Of course, she doesn't believe it's gonna kill her, but she goes and she watches it. I don't know if I would have watched a tape that I was told was cursed. But she's an investigative journalist, and I personally don't think she's very good at her job for a couple of reasons. In the beginning, her boss is gonna fire her. You remember that? And then secondly, when she's going around doing her investigating journalism, she is kind of scattered and all over the place and only coming upon things by sheer dumb luck, in my opinion. I'm like, she's supposed to, she's supposed to be good at her job. She also is, well, she's a single mom, and she's raising her little boy, and they're not close at all, like Alma said.
SPEAKER_00She seems to be busy and preoccupied with work all the time. So I would think she's gonna get fired too, so she can't be that good. I think she's good at her job. I think she's good at her job because that's where they keep her. Like he was complaining about what she's doing, and the way the boss came around to her desk and she just shooed him away. Like that was gonna be doing what I want to be doing, uh, and I don't need your approval to do it. Um, I think that that shows that she's good at her job. And this, it's a movie, so you know, I think that they play her off as a bumbling, a little bit bumbling at times, just because she's the woman, you know. Oh, I think scared, apparently, like the way that they talked to her a couple of times or um the ex talked to her. Um are you overwhelmed with work or whatever? And it's like, come on.
SPEAKER_02I don't remember that. I just I just know maybe, maybe it's just this movie in general that kind of gets under my skin. I had things to say about her, her partner in crime there too. I didn't think he was very good at his job either. I was just like, what is he even doing? So, as I mentioned, her this is the little boy's dad is also her partner in crime in the movie. She goes to him because she needs some video expertise. And he's, you know, I guess he's the go-to guy. Also happens to be the little boy's dad. The little boy knows this, but he doesn't seem to want any kind of connection with him. And the the dad, I forget his name. That's why I don't can can you help me out here? Maybe it doesn't matter. The dad is uh Noah.
SPEAKER_00Noah, thank you.
SPEAKER_02No, no, no, it's fine because I was just gonna keep on calling him the dad, but he's not really a he's not really a dad, so I didn't want to call him that. Yeah, yeah, but he's like biologically the dad. But the whole point I was trying to get at is that he seems to come in and out of their lives, but he has like no connection to the little boy, and that's okay in the movie. And I don't know why it disturbs me, but it's like they could have just made him not be the dad in this movie, and everything would have just been fine. He could have just been some person that she works with. Because I I don't know, in my opinion, it didn't, it didn't really do anything for the story because the little boy doesn't try to make a connection to him, so it's not like they're trying to, you know, do this uh storyline where the little boy's like, oh, I want to be close to my daughter. I mean daughter uh to my dad, and the dad's like, oh, I want to be close to my son. None of that mattered. It was just something to throw into the movie, and I don't know. It just I didn't care for the dad, Noah, whatever. I think they the only reason they have him there is just so that he can die at the end, obviously.
SPEAKER_00And also so we can care about him that he's the I didn't care about it. But I think that's the the whole the whole reason. This so that she had a connection to him, not just a partner in crime. That's funny that you mentioned that because his new girlfriend called herself his partner in crime. Oh, I don't remember that. That's funny. And um, but you know, I think that that was trying to be a connection so that we would feel something when he when he died. He wasn't just a coworker or or something like that. I think I would say for him if he was just a random dude. I see, I see, I see what what you're saying though. And it's difficult to like make comparisons to the original film because Yeah, I'm trying very hard not to.
SPEAKER_02I'm trying very hard to keep this on just this 2002 American version. I I wanted to discuss this movie specifically because it wasn't a favorite of mine, and I thought on a rewatch I might gain some more appreciation for it. And I like Naomi Watts being in these movies where she's she's kind of like she's not really a scream queen, but she's kind of like she's in movies now where she is like where it's uh scary movies, a horror movies, a thriller. She's been doing that for a while now. So I like her. I really, really liked her in funny games, um, but I just had no connection to her. I I didn't care for her character, I didn't care for her um acting in this. Maybe it was the script. It just didn't feel like it was, I don't know. I just I didn't feel for either her or Noah's character at all. I didn't when he when like I said, when Noah finally dies at the end, I was like, okay, all right. It was just up I that's why I said I think I would have felt worse or more for his character if he had just been a random coworker friend, someone she knew. The way he was his character was very aloof was his with his own son. The fact is like, oh, I didn't want to be a dad. You know, it's just kind of like it rubbed me the wrong way, and I just didn't care for his character at all. It's like, die, okay, that's fine. It doesn't bother me one bit. The one person I did feel bad for was the little boy, because even though they kind of wrote him being uh, you know, uh maybe a little bit emotionally um disconnected from Naomi Watts' character, uh, I already forgot her name, Rachel. She um, the way she talked to him sometimes, and you could see him like get scared or get um there was this one part she walks in and he's sitting there on the couch or wherever. And I can't remember, I think he's drawing or something. She comes in and she's like, Go to your room. And when you saw the look on his face when she yelled at him, he got up and he ran. I felt so bad for him. She basically, she doesn't yell at him the whole movie, but she Basically, does that throughout the whole movie? She just chews him, dismisses him. Yes, everything she's doing is for him, and you know that she loves him and she's showing her love in a different way. But I felt so bad for him because he's obviously this troubled little boy who is missing his cousin, even though he may not show it like other people do. He's missing his cousin. He was close to his cousin. Oh, he doesn't have anybody to talk to about it. Yeah. And then she's she's just so she's running around doing shit, and like he's I don't know.
SPEAKER_00That's just it his babysitter is dead, too. His cousin was his babysitter, so then now he has to deal with like another person, a new stranger, in the house watching him while mom is off working late and whatever. And she is still doing her thing, you know. Nothing's changed for him because she's still gone and she's still doing other stuff and not taking care of him.
SPEAKER_02And I like the way he calls her by her name instead of calling her mom. It's so funny. Because so that right there tells you what kind of relationship they had before the death of his cousin. Noah, the dad, I keep calling him the bad dad. I'm sorry. He's not really the dad. He's bio dad. He, like I said before, he was a video specialist, whatever. And you get the idea that she still comes to him for when she needs help at work and stuff like that. I don't know where I was going with this. I was gonna start talking about Noah more, but Yeah, I don't know what to add about Noah.
SPEAKER_00Noah was just a nobody. Noah, nobody. You're on mute. Okay.
SPEAKER_02I was talking about Samara, thank you. And uh while I was on mute, she is another character that I feel bad for. Even though she was had these, this okay, I'm sticking to the American version here. Do we know for sure that she had some kind of I don't want to say power? I think so.
SPEAKER_00I think it I think they do because they discuss it when she goes to the um the mental health care hospital. But do they say they ask her? So what we're talking about is nensha, which is the psychic ability to burn images from your mind into um solid form just by thinking about him. So that's in the Japan, but that's in the Japanese version. They don't really discuss it here. However, the doctors ask her, how does she create these images? Where did they come from? So I think, yeah, she has them. She has that ability to do it. Just like on the wall where they found under the wallpaper, it's burned under um the wall. Uh the videotape was made after she died. Um, and that was burned onto a video tape itself, too, which is out of her time because it's a little later. Because she was it's she must have passed away like in the 70s. Um and yeah. Because I think that said she was born in the 60s.
SPEAKER_02So I think I guess my thing was more about like I don't know. Like I said, I've watched this several times. Maybe I'm not, maybe because maybe I'm just casually watching it then. Because I don't know if her quote unquote powers or whatever are a result of the way her parents treated her, or if she was like this before, and then, you know, ended up becoming the curse. I guess it's I get you.
SPEAKER_00I get you. Because we only know that much that she gets it from her mom's side from the Japanese version, because in the Japanese version they go more into investigation of it, and in the sequels, it it gives you more of an understanding that Samara see so now when we're talking about the other movie, which we shouldn't be, we're talking about this movie. But yeah, so yeah, I we don't know that. We don't know if she was born like that or if um this is something that she got maybe I don't know, but she kind of seemed abused at the point where he was putting her up in the barn, you know, all alone. That's and that's why I felt bad for her. She was putting images in people's heads, and it seemed like it was something that was going on around the whole town, too. And that's why they didn't really say anything once she was gone. They didn't really care.
SPEAKER_02She was that little house, a little house, why did I call it a little house? That little room that she had at the top of the barn was so sad. First of all, that ladder leading up to it was fucking ridiculous. It was way too long, long, way too tall. Yes, that thing could have easily chipped over when they were climbing. Why were both of them fucking climbing it? Why were they both climbing it at the same time? I just remember, I know it's just a movie, and I know I always have to suspend disbelief and everything. The whole time they're fucking climbing it, I'm like, you two would not have been climbing that shit together. And if you did, one of you would have fallen off, if not both of you. And then when they get up to the little loft up there in the barn, and her sad little room with the bed and the TV and the chair and everything. Um, first of all, it's really sad because you think of her all by herself up there. I don't care that she imprinted images on people. That's that's just sad. Anyways, there's a part when you said that they tear off, I think it was the wallpaper. I don't know if it was wallpaper or stuff over the burnt-in image, but they tear it off and then they start walking back to take a look at it. And they were walking back to the edge of the fucking loft. And I'm thinking to myself, are you guys paying attention? Are you guys paying attention at all? You almost you you're this close to falling off the fucking loft. And we've already established that that loft is really fucking high. See, I think this is why I don't pick up on a lot of things in movies because I fixate on these weird things. And that just I remember thinking, like, why are they walking backwards? Why are they still walking backwards? They're not even paying attention on this really high loft. Okay, next I want to talk about, I'm telling you next what I want to talk about. I want to talk about the the well. Did it sound like I said whale? The well. No. The well. Okay. You said fine. Because speaking of really high tall things, when they find the well, leading, I'm gonna tell you what led up to finding the well because they're in the house, right? They fucking drop these marbles. I'm calling them marbles. I don't know. Remember those? They're it was from those decorations that we used to have back in the day that was always fucking marbles. I don't know why we did that. So the marbles fall and they're like doing their thing on the ground, and then they uh what what's the word I'm looking for? They conjoin or they all come to one area on the floor, and that for some reason, instead of them scattering all over the place, they all come into this little tight circle, right? That tells them for some reason, Rachel and Noah, oh, that means there's something underneath the floor. Where the fuck did they get that from? I would have just thought, oh, foundation's off. No, they're like, oh, there's something underneath. So they start tearing apart the floor. In what world does do things migrating together on the floor tell you, let's tear apart the floor and see what's underneath. So they tear apart the floor and they find the well. They find the well and then they pick up a rock, a big rock, one that you would be able to hear when it splashes. They drop it and they hear nothing. And they're just standing there waiting for the splash, right? No splash. So what does that tell you? It's deep. They can't see the bottom, they can't hear the splash, and then Naomi fucking Watts falls into the well and she doesn't die.
SPEAKER_00No, she should have died from the fall. Yes, because it was too far. Yes. And when she's standing in the water, it's shallow because she's standing in the water.
SPEAKER_02That's literally what I was about to say. Yes, ma'am. And I'm sorry for cutting you off. It just really bothered me. It just really bothered me that she fell from that height, this supposed long height, and she hits the water, and then she's able to stand in the water, which tells you it's shallow, and she's fine. I'm fine. It's just like I'm totally cool down here. And he can hear her perfectly. He can hear her, they're talking. Talking that really bothered me. I don't know why. Like I said, I fixate off the stupidest things. I'm like, that that fucking and I get it, I get it. These are images from the video. We have that ladder, you know, we have the well when you look up and it's covered, which even though I like the the original, that that still doesn't make sense to me. You're not gonna have a ring of light. You're not gonna have a ring of light. Because what does a ring of light tell you? A ring of light tells you that that cover is too small and it should fall through the fucking well. That's always bothered me. That's funny. I don't know. Maybe they I maybe, yeah. No, that not maybe is just me. Come on, other people have got to have thought of that. So the well is where mom of Samara killed her. She killed her. I don't remember how she killed her. She did something to her from behind and then she threw her into the well. The well didn't kill her. She suffocated her. Yeah, okay. She didn't suffocate her that long because she was she stood behind her for like five seconds, and then that was supposed to kill her, throw her into the well. Seven days to die. So this poor little girl, not only is she all these things happen to her as I'm I'm guessing these things are happening to her as she's uh going through uh at the um the mental health institution where she was taken. They they're videoing her. I don't know what else they're doing to her. Mom's ignoring her, dad's put her up in the fucking loft and in the barn, and then she fucking takes seven days to die in the thing. I would have been pissed off too. I don't know if I would have lashed out at the world, but I definitely would have been pissed off as well. She, I don't know how she makes the video though.
SPEAKER_00She makes it from her mind. Yeah, but what video? She's just able to make her that's the supernatural power, is that she's able to burn the images onto whatever. That's why when she was in talking to the psychiatrist, he had some film that she burned it onto it. She's just able to do it onto different things. And so that was one thing that she was able to burn the images onto. And then when it the the video tape, obviously that's why I said it's it's not of her time, it's because somebody was watching that video tape and she used that videotape to burn the images onto it so that they could watch it too, like so that they could see what it is that she was sending out.
SPEAKER_02And the ending the iconic her climbing out of the um the TV, it's always been a nice one. I've always liked that.
SPEAKER_01But again, I can't get over the fact that this little girl character why didn't they use her?
SPEAKER_02Why didn't they use her to come out of the video? The actress, I mean. They use like a grown-ass woman. At least it looks like it to me. To climb out of the roll out, yes. And then they do show they do use the little girl too on certain in certain images. But when you if you're looking at her, they do close up, they do a close-up of her climbing out of the TV. And I'm like, that is not a little girl. Why couldn't they have the little girl climb out of the TV? Maybe they didn't want to put the makeup on her. Who knows? Who knows? Again, it it's just like these are little things that take me out of it. And I really, really coming into it, because obviously I've watched this movie several times. I don't hate it. It's entertaining, it really is. But these are just things that take me out of the moment. It's just like I like the beginning a lot. I thought the the beginning it's fun. You have the except when they show her face. But I don't know, sorry, that's a little when they show the cousin's face. I that it again, it's it's a little it's a little comical to me. But the movie is okay. Yeah. The movie, the why do I keep saying the movie? The beginning, though, I really, really enjoy because it does, it sets, I think it sets it up nicely. I like the part where they um they go to the is it an the island? Right? It's an island where Samara lived. When they go to the island, um, I guess it is. I think, huh? Yeah, it is. When they're when she's doing her investigative journalism. I thought not her doing the journaling, but uh part where, you know, they're sorry.
SPEAKER_00The journalizing.
SPEAKER_02I liked that. So there are some parts, some elements of the movie that I do enjoy.
SPEAKER_01I I just the parts that I think just that didn't hit kind of just make the movie a little bit uh for me.
SPEAKER_02But I know you like it, and you're not telling me the things that you like. I'm over here shitting on it. I'm being so rude.
SPEAKER_00I want to hear what you liked. I'm not really liking or shitting on it either. I'm pretty neutral about it, I guess. It just doesn't get me, you know. I I think honestly, watching the original first and all the like sequels, probably before I ever saw this one, kind of lost me. But I always tell people that if they're gonna watch one, watch one or the other. Don't watch both. Cause then you're just comparing. You're just comparing. And so with this one, there's there's parts of it that I like. It's enjoyable. It's enjoyable. I'm not trying to sound like unenthusiastic. It's just what I'm trying to like, you know, scrounge around in my brain for things that I liked about it. But I really like the intro. The intro was one of my favorite parts. I thought they did that really well. I was it built up the little parts. It's a PG 13 movie. It could have been done a little bit more graphic and got me better, I think, you know, but they tried to keep it in that frame for PG 13. And so I think that uh like some of the parts that could have been scarier, and I say scarier, you know, but that's something that it I think it needed, you know. I like the face, her face all contorted and shoved in the closet. It didn't make me go, owr, you know, scare me or anything like that, but I liked it. And I like the way they showed the guy's face too at the end of the movie to show that he died the same way in a face of terror. Like that's the the last thing that that he saw, and that's how his face ended up, you know, their look of it.
SPEAKER_02I like I like that you like it. See, that's why uh that's why I wanted to hear what you had to say, because I I like that you liked it more than I liked the movie. I think that watching the original watching subsequent movies that came along, I think kind of did I'm and I'm not saying the original is great, I just think it's better. Obviously it's the original. Um and I think some things also maybe get lost in translation when you make an American version, and granted the American version was made with the original um the original writer of the uh of the first of the Japanese one, but things still had to be changed for an American audience.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, things that lack the the culture of the the meaning and significance of some of those things they had to change in order for it to make more sense. Right, exactly.
SPEAKER_02So the things that they had to change or the things that they did necessarily uh didn't necessarily hit for me. Uh I like American uh horror movies, but I just like them when they're original. And I think this one because it was uh trying so hard to basically retell the Japanese one, it was just kind of like blah to me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because then it seems it seems pointless. And I think I know that's kind of like a uh um a mean thing to say, but if you there's already one, just read the subtitles. That's what I I always feel like. I I I rarely watch the remakes of movies, and when I do, it's always like a disappointment. Um, because I'm like, I already saw I already saw it. It's like, how are they gonna make it a twist? Oh, that's how they're trying to make it a twist. But you know it's coming and you know what's gonna happen, and you know what's like when the movie ended, I already knew that that wasn't when the movie was gonna end, you know? It was like after they haul up poor Samara's body, and she realizes yes, she thinks that freeing her was the way to get it done. Um, we already knew that no, that wasn't it, and she had done something bad, and then um, because they couldn't change that because that was what gave the movie its extra twists, and so they still had to have a twist in there somehow. And so we have that and we know what's gonna happen, and it loses its um, you know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, oh yeah. It would have been yeah, if if they had given it a different ending just to make it different, that would have been interesting. Although what would they have done? Yeah, yeah. It's it's that's why that's why retelling the same story I don't know. I don't I didn't I didn't I didn't appreciate this movie. I know some people did. The critics, obviously. What was it? It was 70 something. Not so much us regular folk. Honestly, I can't think of anything else to say about this movie.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think that's it.
SPEAKER_02That that was the movie.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, unfortunately. Sorry. It's another movie that I have to add to my list that I shat on massively. Well, I d I guess I didn't shit on this one as bad as I have other ones. No, you did it.
SPEAKER_00No, I don't think you did at all. You just gave your honest opinion, and none of it was shitting on the movie. It's just that's the one.
SPEAKER_02It's not my cup of tea.
SPEAKER_00It's not my cup of tea. And I and I'm just indifferent towards it. Another movie where I'm just I feel bad. I feel bad. Let me see.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Not a movie's gonna be a hit. We've talked about poltergeist, we've talked about the sixth sense, the ring this month. God damn it, I better like the next fucking movie I talk about because it's just it's October. It's fucking Halloween month. I'm supposed to be well, I'm watching other movies, obviously, but I feel like I'm letting people down here by not liking these movies. I'm just letting myself down by watching the movies. All right, I think that's it for this movie. It was The Ring, the American version. It was, I'm looking back on the 2002. So yeah, this was, oh my god. I just did the math in my head 24 years ago, Alma. That was a long time ago.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_02It was a long time ago, but it wasn't because we were around that in that era. Geez. All right, Alma. So where can people find us on the internet? Where can people get a website, Instagram, Blue Sky, all that good stuff?
