Hey, I'm Dahlia. And I'm Alma. Welcome to the Gory Details podcast, where we discuss horror from every angle. We break it down with humor, sarcasm, and curiosity, looking at what scares and excites us most, what gets ignored, and the people shaping the genre right now. We are still in October. We are still in October for a few more days. And I am excited to say that we are still discussing Ghosts of Supernatural because I am going to like one of these fucking movies. Oh, so this one's the one that you're excited to talk about because you like it. Well, it I'm excited to talk about it because I don't think I'm going to be as uh negative Nancy as I have been. Okay. Well, let us know. What movie are we watching then? We are discussing The Woman in Black 2012. And okay. So the movie description is a young solicitor travels to a remote village where he discovers that the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals. This was in 2012, 66% on rotten tomatoes. Uh that's not great. 54% with the general audience. 66%. About the same. Same there for both sides. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00What do you think about that 66 though? I don't know. Um let's talk about it. Yeah. Who wrote it? Who directed it? Who's in it? Tell me all that good stuff.
SPEAKER_01It's written by Susan Hill and Jane Goldman, directed by James Watkins. Daniel Radcliffe plays Arthur Kipps. Sam Daly is played by Kiryan Hines. I apologize for mispronouncing that name. And his wife is played by Janet McTear.
SPEAKER_00We're discussing, first of all, Arthur, who is Daniel Radcliffe's character. And he is a widower. So this movie is really, really dark. Like when I'm talking about dark, I'm not talking about like it's dark. I'm talking about like visually dark, gloomy, gray. Love it. All the muted colors. Setting up a scene here. I feel the cold. I feel like we're in England. I've never been there, but they are setting the scene just perfectly. I'm yeah. Music. They don't go over the top. I'm just going to say it right now. I'm I'm already liking the vibe. I'm coming in. See, I'm trying very hard not to be so uh uh like I have been in the past, you know, coming into the movie already with my opinions, my bad opinions of whether I'm gonna like it or not. I'm trying to get into the mood here. So I think they're setting up the the story just perfectly. And the other thing that I have going to uh my advantage is that I've never seen any of the Harry Potter films. So I don't know him as a Harry Potter guy. I just know him as Daniel Radcliffe as an adult, uh, I was about to say adult performer. I don't think so. Well, as an adult actor. So I I could come into this kind of like, you know, like, hey, yeah, I'm gonna watch this movie. I know this guy did these movies when he was younger. How did you feel? Because you are a uh Harry Potter, at least you read the books. I don't know if you watched a movie. Well, I was now but I mean at the time.
SPEAKER_01Yes. I read all the books and watched all the movies, yes.
SPEAKER_00Did that kind of seeing him in this kind of role, or did you even watch this when it first came out? When when did you first watch this movie?
SPEAKER_01I I watched it when it first came out, and no, I didn't have any like judgment of like what he was gonna be. Children actors, they sometimes they end up not being good and sometimes they end up being okay. And or, you know, I didn't mean to say it so, you know, down. But yeah, I just didn't have an opinion about it. You know, I can do that.
SPEAKER_00Well, I know that it was like soon after, if not right after, he did like maybe the last Harry Potter film. So he is this is like a I know he did a play where he was naked also, but this is kind of like him being different, you know, coming out into something totally new. Uh maybe not, maybe all the Harry Potter movies were this dark too. I think now that I think about it, any clip I've ever seen, they've kind of been obscured from light. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they're pretty much the same darkness.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So movie does a good job of starting from the beginning, building that dread where we have what is it, like the three little girls that unfortunately. Yeah. So right off the bat, we're like, oh, we're gonna get into it. We're just gonna start here. That I okay. That scene reminded me so much. Do you remember the scene from oh, did you watch Game of Thrones? No. Oh, you didn't watch Game of Thrones, so this is gonna be totally lost on you. It reminded me of a scene from Game of Thrones when uh Cersei's son kills himself, he gets up on the window ledge and jumps. Reminds me so much of that scene. I just they was like, but of course, if you don't if you've never seen that scene, then this doesn't make any sense at all to you. Okay, so we have dad, widower, wife died at birth. Why do they always gotta die at birth? But giving goes. Yeah. Sorry, the wife did not die at birth. I guess it's a you know, um see, I think people understood what I meant when I said that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it just sounded funny because you said it again and I just finished. It sounded funnier.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, she died giving birth to the little boy, and the little boy now is like what, like five? Four? I'm really bad at guessing ages. I could have easily said six and I would have just rolled with that. But he's young, he's a youngin'. He's being raised by nanny. The nanny who seems, in my opinion, I had to mention, seems rather annoyed by dad. Or is it just me? Did she give you off kind of like vibes that she's annoyed by dad? Like, what are you even doing here? Just let me raise your kid in peace.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. I didn't really pay her any attention. I should have, but I just was focused on the little kid and the, you know, the drawn-out scene of him leaving him for and with the little cartoon booklet that he made where where he put nothing on the days that his dad's not gonna be there and everything. I was like, that was right. They dragged that out, huh?
SPEAKER_00They really did. It was so much so that I really thought that that little booklet was gonna come, that little page, whatever you want to fucking call it. I thought it was gonna come more into play later. I mean, he took it out a few times, but I it wasn't like I thought it was gonna like save his life or something, like he was gonna take it out, like wacha, here we go. No. I mean, it's just something he did, and that scene was kind of, but that kind of brings me into my first point. First point. I was sitting through the movie and I was like, hmm, I'm a little bored. Because it's a little slow. It was a little slow is also kind of being kind. It was very slow. Don't watch this movie if you're expecting well, gloomy ghost stories can be slow, but this was really slow. Like show me what's going on. A lot of dialogue, not a lot of dialogue, a lot of visual. Um no, not even that. Because sometimes when I would see something, I was just like, am I really supposed to be paying attention to that? Or maybe that's that's the point, the subtleness of everything. We got the subtleness of seeing the woman in black and the whenever he'd see her. We got the um everything was just muted in this movie. And that's and that's a vibe. I think it was just a little slow for me. I didn't hate the I didn't hate this movie, so I guess didn't it wasn't that bad.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay. So we now we're come down to it wasn't that bad. So that's better than you didn't like it.
SPEAKER_00I don't mean what I meant was I know it sounded like I was making the movie see say uh it sounded like I would say that the movie wasn't that bad. Um it's not. I guess I was getting more talking more about the pacing, because the pacing was just really slow. And when we'd get to parts of the story, like kind of helped explain certain things that were going on, I'd be like, oh, okay, but now we know. It wasn't exciting finding out though. I guess that's the point I'm trying to get at. Sometimes, you know, there's a slow buildup, we're getting to it, and all of a sudden it's like, oh my god, that was so worth the wait. And then this one it was more kind of like, yeah, I kind of saw that coming. Yeah, I kind of knew that already. You told us, you know, about 10 minutes ago when you first started showing us a scene, and now you're just getting to the point. That kind of thing. But it didn't make me like chuck out of this movie early or at the end go like, oh, that was not worth my time. Because at the end, I was like, okay, all right, that was a movie. Yeah. Um, and we'll talk about the ending too, but I want to get it more into Arthur. That's the dad, right? Yeah. Character. He is grieved, like I said earlier, he is grieving his wife, who died when she gave birth to the son. And I'm not laughing at that. I'm just laughing at my wording. So he's grieving her, obviously, very sad. But come on, dude. It's four years later, and you are that child's only lifeline. Well, the nanny, I guess. But how how can you how can you afford that nanny? You can afford that nanny because you're supposed to be doing a good job at work. But we have a scene where his boss is telling him, oh my God, like this is totally like you have to do this job well, or we're gonna fire you. He says it in a different way, but he gives him this job to go to that haunted house to look for papers. Well, it's gonna be a haunted house. But the reason I'm mentioning it, the reason I'm mentioning it, it's you can't say it is together like that without sounding weird. The boss basically says you have not been doing well at your job, but here's this really big job for you to go do, don't fuck it up. And then so he's supposed to go and if he wants to keep his job, he has to go and do this job. It doesn't make sense to me. Like, why do you give someone who is not doing a good job that's a big job to do? It's like I that that bothered me. It's like ask somebody else, or are they really that uh uh like are there really not that many lawyers or solicitors around where they have to like, oh we only got this guy, might as well send him. You know, that's kind of what it was. It's like why is that giving that job?
SPEAKER_01A job that nobody else wants to do. So they gave it to him. Going away for a few days to an old haunted house. Yeah, it doesn't sound exciting. So they stayed behind and they're kicking it and he gets to go on a field trip.
SPEAKER_00There you go. That that must be it. I like I like that version of the story because he goes and right away he's met with opposition from the local townsfolk. They're trying to get him to go away. They don't have a room in the inn for him. Um, but they found a room in the manger for just kidding, he's not Jesus. Um, but they they got him up in the attic now, and up in the attic is where we see, like, oh shit, some went, some stuff went down in here in the attic. At first, when I'm first watching this movie, I'm like, why are they so insistent on sending him away? Like, he's the bad guy. I kept thinking, like, how do they know he's the bad guy? I'm, you know, I'm trying to think through, is he the bad guy? What's going on? Apparently he's bringing the bad juju. He's bringing the bad juju when he appears. I don't understand though how he brings it, because he goes to the house, right? Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01I think for for going anywhere near there, because they said that anytime anyone sees her, and where do they see her? They see her on the property. So they're trying to stay away from the property, and then nobody wants to go up there either. And no one wants to see anything because if they see it, the the the child will be taken.
SPEAKER_00Well, I don't know. That's mean of me to laugh at that part. It's like you said the child will be taken, and I laugh. Okay, I think you explained it perfectly then. Thank you. Because I was like a little bit obviously I knew what it's leading up to. I know that every time he sees her or anybody sees her, something bad is gonna happen to a kid in the town. I I mean, I understood all that. I just didn't get the part where everybody knew because he was coming, and then you just said it's like, well, he's gonna go up to the house and then he's gonna see her. It's like, oh duh, yeah, sorry about that. Now it clicks. That's why everybody was trying to keep him away. So doesn't matter though, because he is gonna do his job, otherwise he loses it. He's got a kid to raise, apparently he's got a nanny to pay as well. He goes to the house and he starts going through everything. First of all, oh my God, love that land bridge. Those, anytime I see that in like in a movie, a painting or whatever, I want to hop on one of those land bridges when the when the tide is down. Oh, no way. And like ride, it's like I don't know why I'm making that humming sound, but I'm like driving up to that terrifying, that terrifying.
SPEAKER_01That's why it's in the movie of the hauntedist movie. There is.
SPEAKER_00Well, I I like the idea. Maybe I like the idea of it more than actually doing it, but I I like the visuals. I love the uh what's the word on the isolation that it's giving the house. Um, so you have to take the land bridge to go to the house. Of course, it's gonna float over during certain times. So he has to be picked up at certain times. It has to be at this time or this time, or else he's, you know, that's it. You're stuck there for that time period or whatever. He goes to the house, he starts snooping around because he's looking for papers, but in my opinion, he's looking at more things than what he needs to be looking at. Because like he's straight up reading it looks like a fucking diary or something. And I was like, Sir, is that any of your business?
SPEAKER_01I know he's literally reading everything that he finds, and there's just boxes of or treasure chests full of letters and cards and everything to go through. What a fun job. That's like like what they get to go out and do. They go read everybody's business.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's what he's doing. He's reading everybody's business. In this case, he is reading um, oh my god, what is the lady's name that he's reading uh her business of? Oh, I don't remember. Just the she was the woman in black? The lady of the house. No the lady of the house. It wasn't the it wasn't the woman in black because the woman in black actually killed herself. I just couldn't remember their names. Oh, yeah, that's fine. I'm just gonna get to who everybody is. The lady who he's going through all her stuff is the sister of the woman in black. The woman in black is pissed because they took her child away and her sister ended up raising the little boy. Or did she? Not really. I don't know why I said it like that. The little boy ends up dying in an accident, and the woman in black, who is still alive at the time, but is pissed. You killed my son, and then she kills herself. So now she's a ghost and her ghostly apparition is the thing that is starts the killing. If people see her, then she takes away a child of yours because she's pissed off. You took my child, I'm gonna take your child. That's whose house it is. It's the sister, not the woman in black. I just wanted to explain that. I'm explaining it more to myself, more than anything I can remember. No, but it's part of the story.
SPEAKER_01That was a great way to explain the part of the story here because uh we learned that that's why she's so angry, and that's why she's a restless spirit and why she's there on the property. It explains all of those things because otherwise it's like, what was she doing there? She just happens to be there. Um, you know, there's a lot of backstory with the with the young child and the fact that the body was lost at sea, lost at sea, you know, there in the marshland that was surrounding the property. But so the little boy is just trapped there, and the mom is trapped there too, and she is angry.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, she's angry because I just you just remembered uh you just said something that I remembered. So the little boy, not only is he taken away from her, he dies in the accident, but then his body isn't recovered. That was the other thing, too. It's like not only did you leave him to die, his body is still there in the marsh in the mud. It's like, cause that's gonna come back later in a really interesting way, which I can't wait to get to. But the house. We drive up to the house, it's isolated. When he first starts going through it, a little bit before he starts doing all his his reading, you know, of the diaries and shit like that. He there's a part where he opens up um, I think it's a faucet or something, and all this brown sludge comes sludge comes out. And I remember I was like, is that shit? Is that it was probably just marsh water. It was probably just marsh water, but it looked like like diarrhea pouring out of a faucet.
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh, that's so disgusting. I didn't even think that. I just thought marsh, that's like the dirty bog water that's coming out of there.
SPEAKER_00It makes sense what you're saying. Of course it does. Any other normal human being is gonna be like, oh yeah, yeah, it's dirty water. I was like, oh, is that sewage? I just kept thinking, but he didn't react. And I'm like, why is he not reacting to the sewage? Oh, okay. I just wanted to mention it because I was like, first of all, like, where is this coming from? And secondly, it just I just felt like a I was about to say I felt like a turd, but pun intended. Not really. I just said that. Now I sound like anything. Oh my god. So also another cool thing about this house is that it gets covered in fog. You know me and fog. Fog in movies, I can do because fog in real life scares the shit out of me. I don't like driving in it. I don't like walking in it. It comes from the movie The Fog when I was little. And the fog, watching the movie The Fog now as a grown-ass adult is not scary, but there's something about watching the movie The Fog when you're a little kid that is just scary and it gets imprinted onto your psyche that anytime you go into the fog, there's something scary, there's something horrible out there. So you throw fog into this movie and you you got the perfect what is it called? Scenery. Yes. Oh, okay. All of it. Whatever. Yeah, all of the words. So the house, whether it's haunted or not, is gonna be creepy. And that's the thing right there. When he starts hearing shit around the house, the first thing that pops into my mind, of course, would be who the hell is living in this house? I'm not thinking ghosts, I'm thinking who's living in it because it's so isolated. Anybody could just go and live in it. Why wouldn't you? I mean, back in the olden days, I've been really easy. Yeah, really easy to just go into a house and park your butt there and live. Nobody was going to the house. The woman in black could have just been a regular, you know, towns lady that, you know, everybody forgot about her and she found a new house and she's over there living, and everybody's like, oh, the woman in black. It's just like, oh, it's just Marsha. This is Marsha from the marsh. I didn't even I didn't even do that on purpose. I just said maybe it was just in my head, Marsha. Marsha. I love that. So, but okay, so. He's hearing sounds in the house. And like I said, uh the honestly, because I've also watched so many different kinds of horror movies and and ghost stories, and this is more of a a ghostly drama more than anything. But um is the fact that sometimes there are people that are the bad guys. So I'm thinking, you know, yeah. And then I'm thinking like in real life, oh, I of course I would have thought somebody's living in the house. But I don't know if it's this time or if it's a separate time. But when he first comes into the room, he's he's going around looking for everything. He finds a rocking chair that's rocking on its own. We find out later what that rocking chair, why it's rocking like that. But it's in a room that has all these fucking, and why do they always have these toys, these creepy ass toys? That again is something that's gonna creep me the fuck out. I love it. That's a nursery thing. Yes, but the fucking toys of the days of yore are creepy for no reason. And that's what I love. Okay, okay, I see. I love old toys. I love looking at the doll. I mean, they're so I used to collect creepy dolls. They weren't really creepy, they were like regular porcelain-like dolls that were reimagined into being creepy. And I used to collect those dolls. And yeah. And um, no, but that's that's it's I love those old toys that are made for kids, obviously. But what were you trying to do to that kid? There was no way that you were trying to appease that child, make them feel comfortable, make them calm down. No, because what was up with that one doll that looked like it had had his eyes pecked out or something like that? Then we have the little lamp spinny thing, you know, when you spin it and it looks like a moving picture. Oh, I love those.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, those are really creepy. They have them in the one of the um conjuring movies at the second one.
SPEAKER_00But so this room full of the creepy toys. Love it. Um my god, I I was going somewhere with this, but I think I was just setting up the mood for everybody. So he's reading, finding out about the history of the sister and all that. So he's got that in the back of his mind. Let's pocket that for later. He's back in town. The boys are back in town. I don't know. That's the song. I don't know. I might have my data. So he's back in town and again, they're trying to get oh, he made a friend. I forgot about that. We need to mention his friend. Yes, Mr. Dave. Yeah. He made a friend on the train and Sam, you say? Sam gave him a ride to where he needed to go. So now suddenly they're best friends. Very interesting. This is such an interesting thing that happens, an interesting dynamic of the days of I don't know, when was this movie happening? Like uh, I already forgot. Uh early 1990s.
SPEAKER_01The car had just come out. Yeah, the car had just come out because he was the only one who had one in the village.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because you meet someone for the first time, all of a sudden you're best friends. That's just the point I was trying to get at. I first of all, I'm on a train, don't talk to me. If you talk to me, I'm not gonna accept a ride from you. I'm not gonna accept a ride from a stranger, but you know, to do that. They can easily, you know, you that's what you do. Someone offers you a ride, you go. He ends up inviting him to his house as well to have dinner. What? Sam invites Daniel Radcliffe to his house for dinner. I think it's probably just to show off to his wife that he met Harry Potter. Because why else are you gonna bring a stranger to your house and then say, oh yeah, my son's dead? Oh yeah, don't mention it to my wife or don't bring it up. And then have things happening that that makes it so, of course, she starts bringing it up. Hey, do you have a child? He's like, Yes, I have a child. Oh, I had a child once. Of course it's gonna come up in conversation. I just, I don't know. I just find I just find it funny. This is where also we start seeing some influences of that era, which were um, they were talking about seances. Um, what is that writing called? The um, oh gosh, the trance writing or whatever with when you're uh in a trance and then you start writing, supposedly from a spirit, the spirit's talking through you. So we have Sam's wife who can do that, but she does it in a really mean way. She picks up shit and she makes it permanent. She makes it permanent like on the table, and then she makes it permanent on the wall. It's like somebody give her a piece of paper and a pen or something because she's being rude. She's like scratching it into stuff.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00All right.
SPEAKER_01But they're important, the images she draws. One of them is a lady hanging, and then the second one is a picture of a train and her um the dad and the son together.
SPEAKER_00I forgot about that image until you just said it right now. It's like, damn, that was a train. You're right. So she's she's got the power. She can see shit, or something sings shit through her. Maybe it's the shit that's pouring out of that.
SPEAKER_01She had a creepy voice from the beginning.
SPEAKER_00She made a creepy voice and her eyes changed when she was doing it too. How did I not notice that? You're on mute, but I didn't notice that at all. I okay, I'm gonna take your word for it. I believe you because you are sure. No, you are very um you see the shit I don't, so I believe you. Okay, I hope I'm right. Okay. So we got all that going on. We got uh I I want to say that Daly, because I got it in my head that their last name was Daly. So Mrs. Daly, Mr. Daly. Yeah, have a son that died young. Uh, we are meeting people in town who had children who died young. We end up having kids die young while Daniel Radcliffe is there. One of the times, embarrassingly, oh, this is so embarrassing. He goes into the house, the house is on fire, and one of the moms, a mom is standing outside the house and she's screaming, and they're keeping everybody from going back into the house because it's on fire. It's like really on fire. And Daniel Radcliffe is like, oh, let me go in there and grab the child and save them. He goes in and he comes out without the kid. The kid still dies in the fire. I'm like, why'd you even go in there? Because now it looks worse that you went in there and came out empty-handed. You could have just stood outside like everybody else and just let it happen. But no, he goes in to show the kid die.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00So he comes out empty-handed without a kid, and I swear that mom looked at him like it was his fault to begin with. Because, you know, when they were trying to shoe him off the island, but now he comes out of the house without the kid. It's like, you really gotta get out of here, dude. That's all I thought. I don't even know what part of the movie that was in. I just wanted to mention that because I was thinking about it. Uh I think that was the second death of a child in under his watch.
unknownUnder his watch.
SPEAKER_00Sometime around there, he ends up um, you know, at first he's kind of like, oh, what's stuff, what's really happening here? Then he starts believing that it is a ghost that's somehow doing these things. And of course, his brand new best friend Sam, the one that lives in the town and gave him a ride and everything, is like, oh, you know, that's hobsnobbery. I made that word up. I don't know. He's like, that's posh doodle. None of that exists. These are words. I think they're from the time from the days of your. So I just try to get to the dog. He gets he ends Yeah. Um there, or maybe it's not even his dog. I just try to get to the dog. There's a part of his dog. Yes. Yeah. Spider. Yes. It is his dog. Okay, good. All right. Sam finally starts believing Daniel Radcliffe, and we're seeing all this stuff go on. And the reason Sam was so resistant against this being a ghost and a curse and all that is because his little boy died, and his little boy died from that ghostly curse. And I guess he just didn't want to admit it. Wife knew, his wife knew what was going on, but he was kind of like, no, no, no, because then you know he'd have to admit all this shit. And then he's like, Okay, I'm gonna help you with your with your things. Um, you're gonna go and you're gonna finish up at the house. We're gonna finish, you're gonna finish doing your shit there, and um, but you're not gonna go alone to the house. I have this dog here named Spider, and the dog spider's gonna go with you. And why is that dog more cute than a than a guard dog? Why did he send him off with spider? That spider was a cute size. He was cute. He was tiny. He was adorable, though. He was a good one. I would have taken spider. I would have taken that dog. What's saying he was a good size? He wasn't a good size. He's not scary to anybody. That was an adorable dog. What is that dog gonna do to anybody or anything? He was adorable. He was like a bark. He did bark too. He was so cute. Why did he name him Spider? That was so funny. So I love that dog. I did not look it up. Doesthedogdie.com. I'm gonna let you all know right now, the dog is fine. I mean, I don't know how the real dog is today. It was 2012, but um way to make it sad. I'm sorry. I just had a dog die two dogs die recently. I know, and that makes I miss my dogs. Anyways, he goes to the house, and there's a part where he's like, uh, I think it's Sam, is like, oh, I'll pick you up at 11 or something like that. Like at night, you know, because they have to, you know, deal with the land bridge and all that and the low tide and the high tide. And Daniel Radcliffe is like, uh, no, it's okay. I'm just gonna stay the night. This is when he's already believing shit is going down. Why is he saying he's gonna stay the night? He's just gonna work through the night, he says. I'm just gonna work through the night. Stuff happens. I can't remember exactly what happens, but we've we find out that one of the rooms is where uh sister, I think, ended up No, am I getting my places mixed up?
SPEAKER_01No, that's the woman in black The Woman in Black hung herself there in that room, in that nursery.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and the uh so we got the imagery of the rocking chair. Ooh, we have a rocking chair from last week too, and the ring, right? Uh I guess I guess rocking chairs are creepy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01The sound of them creeping back and forth with nobody in it is creepy. You're on mute.
SPEAKER_00I'm over here talking about ghostly kids and everything, and I'm on mute. So the ghostly kids, we see them, but they're not doing anything. They're not really bothering anybody. I don't think they are, do you? No, they won't. They're just yeah. But they're ghostly kids. But they're ghostly kids. So I'm trying to pay real hard attention to this because I'm like, usually ghostly kids in a movie, they're gonna be up to no good. But I think I spend too much time paying attention to what's going on there that it's just like this is where I was talking about where things that lead up to nothing or kind of lead up to a something that's kind of like, really? That whole buildup was just for that. I think the buildup was just honestly, I have no idea why. Because when we get to the part where they finally find the body of their little boy. Um, Daniel Radcliffe decides that he somehow knew exactly where that body was gonna be. In the marsh, he gets his best friend Sam to tie a rope around him and his really nice car. I couldn't find out what kind of car that was. That was a really nice car. So he has Sam tie the rope to the car, tie the rope to Daniel Radcliffe. Daniel Radcliffe goes into the mud to find the little boy, the body of the dead little boy, right? Knows exactly where he's at, pulls out the body of this little boy. Why did he look like a regular little boy covered in mud?
SPEAKER_01I'm like, hasn't it been a while? I get like mummified because of the bog. You know, like the bog people.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the bog people, you're right. I forgot about that. Damn. Science. Yeah, that is science. I should have I should have caught that. Now I feel like a doo-doo head. Anyways, I'm obsessed with shit this this episode, aren't I? So, but little boy looks beautiful, perfect. He's just covered in mud. He takes him, he grabs him, and he takes him to his mommy who's buried. Um was this at the house? She's buried at the house, right? Takes it to the to her grave at the house, digs her body up. She looks like she's been dead a while, puts the little boy in, cover him up. Ooh, the curse is broken. We're good now. We're not. This is like the movie we saw last week when we watched the ring. You think that reuniting them is gonna, you know, or whatever is gonna make everything go fine.
SPEAKER_01Better, but no. No, what happened? And I think that's really messed up because that was a lot of hard work, and then he he was able to reunite the the little boy and the mom. You would think that that was something significant and something like huge, and like, yeah, we conquered this. I mean, even if it's not conquered, he should she should he should have gotten some credit for that. Like he didn't get no credit for that.
SPEAKER_00That was a lot of work. That was a lot of fucking work. That's why I said he happened to know exactly where he was at. So, like, what was he doing all day? Triangulating distances and bringing out his his ruler. It was marked. They they marked it with a big giant um cross. You've seen crosses on the side of the road before. There aren't open exactly where the person is just where they can be like, that's where it was. That's where it was. But I didn't think that meant literally this is where he's dead. It's more like this is the general area. This he went in, he dove, he found the car, he found the body, and he and I'm like, you did how did you find that? That shit was six feet under the mud. I fixate, I told you, y'all are are becoming accustomed to the fact that I fixate on the stupidest things. I was fixated on that. So you're right though. He didn't get any credit for that because that was a lot of work. And I was actually, you know, I was actually praising him, Alma. I was praising him at the fact that he was able to get in that mud and find him. Now you ruined it by saying he knew exactly where he was because there was a cross. I thought he was doing science to find him.
SPEAKER_01Well, that too. Also, he had all the reports. It could have said the mud was too deep after eight feet, so he measured it, you know, or something like that. He was reading way too much information and none of it had anything to do with his job.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. How was he gonna come away? How did he think he was gonna come away from that whole thing and still have a job? Because did he ever find the will? There were he was there looking for a will or papers so they could settle the the house, the estate. He he didn't, he just found stuff that everybody already knew. Sister passed away, nephew passed away, this house is empty. You still don't have my will. You know, that's all that ended up happening from that. But his kid, the whole time, his son was coming to meet him on Friday. Remember how we mentioned that little booklet the little boy made in the beginning? I thought it was gonna lead up to something and didn't really, other than just counting down the days for us. Friday, Nanny and the little son were gonna come and meet him at um where he's at, and they were gonna, you know, reunite after a whole week of being away or whatever, right? So he's reunited the little boy, the dead little boy, with the dead mama, and we think everything's okay. But the fact that we're still watching a movie tells you otherwise. They go to the, I was gonna say the gas station, the train station, he meets up with his son and the nanny, and why do they take their eyes away from him? They take their eyes off of that little boy for way too long, in my opinion. What is then he sends the nanny to go and buy tickets so they can go home. He's like, oh, change of plans. We're not staying here, we're going right back to London. Okay. She goes off to buy the tickets. He's supposed to be watching over his little boy, and he isn't. What was the nanny's job? That should be nanny's job. I know I'm putting more on her. I'm just I'm just trying to blame somebody here because the little boy gets away. Little boy gets away and he fucking is walking on the tracks. Why? How did he get down there? How do you get down there? Think about it. Look at it. Do you ever watch Drag Me to Hell? She had a fall. She had a fall and she couldn't get down.
SPEAKER_01I'm in the ladder.
SPEAKER_00Did you say there was a little ladder? Yeah. You know what would be really funny if the whole scene was him walking down a little ladder and I I just imagine his little boy climbing down a little bit. And they cut it out.
SPEAKER_01That way then you would be able to see it.
SPEAKER_00I tell you, I'll fixate on the stupidest things. I fixated on last week on the in the ring when Naomi Watts falls into the well and she doesn't die from that fall. And I'm seeing this little boy get down into the onto the tracks, and he's fine. He doesn't look like his coat's dirty. He's all walking. And then Daniel Radcliffe is like, oh shit, my son, here comes the train. Oh no. He goes and he shields his son from the from the train. Everything's okay. The happy ending. The end. Nope. No. Well, uh, maybe a happy ending. I don't know. It depends on how you see it. What happens? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01He gets they get hit by the train. And he says, and and the the thing was, it's true. It took so long that you knew that that was gonna happen because they kept talking about, well, the lady, the the woman in black was shouting from the thingy that she was never gonna forgive, never gonna forgive, you know, and so they were gonna, it was gonna happen. And the way they kept talking about, you know, seeing them in the afterlife or whatever, it was like, well, if there's ghosts, there's the afterlife. So they're gonna meet up. And yeah, he didn't do his job anyway. He was gonna get fired and lose the nanny. He was gonna actually have to watch his kid and feed him and teach him stuff too. Solicitor jobs are a dime a dozen back then. Yeah, I'm sure he'll find another one.
SPEAKER_00He was, well, not anymore. He's dead. I mean he uh that's right. He was gonna end up having to do it all himself. He was gonna lose his job, might as well, might as well be dead, I guess. Um okay, so this is the part why I mentioned the little kid, the little uh ghost kids earlier. He, when Daniel Radcliffe and his son die, they see his dead wife, his dead mama. The little boy's like, oh, who's that lady? It's like, oh, that's your mom. He never met his mom. They're reunited and they're going off to heaven or wherever they're going. They're walking off into a really nice lit part of the track. Did you notice that? It's just like it lit up. Yeah. And it's like, oh, it's so heavenly. They're walking towards it. Why were the ghostly kids stuck in the darkness? Because right when he first died, he sees the ghostly kids. Kids. They didn't do anything bad to him. They didn't do anything wrong in life. They're just stuck. How come they didn't get to go on, but he got to go on?
SPEAKER_01That makes me sad. I thought of that same question, the thingy, that's why it doesn't make any sense. It's just part of the the movie not making sense.
SPEAKER_00But I did. I really did feel bad because, like I said, it it it just it just left kind of a I'm happy that I'm not happy that they're dead. I'm happy that he feels like he got something good out of it. Like if I'm gonna die anyways, I might as well well be reunited with my wife, you know? Um, but it's kid had to have to die. And then the other ghostly kids are kind of stuck in the gloom. He goes off into the light, the ghostly kids are stuck in the gloom, and the woman in black continues to still going to keep doing Yeah. She's gonna continue to curse and kill kid kill uh I don't know, I didn't watch the second one. Did you watch the second one? I don't think I did. I know there's a second one. I I remember thinking, did I watch that? I told myself to read about it, but I didn't hate this movie, so I didn't want to like read about the second one and really be like, oh, you fucked up what little I liked about the first one, you know? So I'm like, and Daniel Radcliffe and and some of the principal makers behind the first one were not a part of the second one. So it would probably, probably be a different story. And and as it is, I en I enjoyed this enough where I can just let it be, if that makes sense. I like the creepy elements. I was getting into everything inside of the movie. I was trying to let you know that those are the things that I really enjoyed, because I think when you set the mood, other things can be forgiven sometimes. So, like, even though there are some plot holes for me, I'm like they set up the mood really well, I think. That beautiful house, the land bridge, um uh the stories kind of hit or miss, but I mean, you got the elements there of a good ghost story. And while it wasn't a good ghost story, it was okay enough that I'm watching it at night and I see the toys that always creep me out in these movies as creepy toys. I see the fog, I see these things. I'm like, okay, I'm getting into the mood. Kind of like when I watch The Others. The Others is not a scary movie, but there's something about watching the others that just kind of like it just it's a vibe and it's a good vibe for me. Because it for me, it feels it feels creepy enough to be enjoyable, if that makes sense. And would you say that you're normally a fan of like ghostly movies or or this this type of movie? It is a little it's not a little slow burning, it's very slow burning, but would you say you're a fan of these type of movies in general or not? No, no, not at all.
SPEAKER_01I think that this was so slow. I I felt like my my whole body needed to stretch every two seconds. I it was torturous and just way too long. Just it felt way too long, even though it wasn't even that long. I don't think I think it just was too drawn out for me. Not my not my taste. Um it wouldn't be that long. I like the the the mood setup, but once they show the woman in black and then they keep showing her, they're showing her and showing her and showing her, and we get it, you know, she's in the movie, you know. They she must have made a lot of money per per appearance on the screen. But just but I but I did like the vibe of it. Like you mentioned the vibe, and um like I did enjoy that, like the first sitting into the movie and and feeling all the you could tell that they put a lot of hard work into the gloom of the time period or the house period or whatever you want to call it. Like, yeah, so but unfortunately, just not my bag.
SPEAKER_00Just like I like the way you described that you felt like you had to stretch every couple of minutes. And the reason I told you it wasn't that long is because it really wasn't. It was a little over 90 minutes, I think. It was under 100 minutes, if I remember correctly. So normally movies when the movies are that long, I don't think they're that long. If they start getting up into two-hour territory, I'm like, ugh, but you're right. Um, this movie, and I'm coming from a place of not hating it, but yeah, it's really drawn out. Um I think you could still, I don't know, I guess it is hit or miss because I'm like, I'd say, yeah, give it a try. If if you have nothing else going on, you know, watch it at night. You have to, and not because I think it's gonna be scarier, it's because literally the movie is very dark. So you want to be in a dark room watching it so you can see what's coming out at you. That's the reason. I don't I I don't think it's necessarily gonna make it, you know, that that's you know, scary or anything like that. But definitely watch it at night. Um I'm just trying to say that it it I think it really is gonna be hit or miss, whether you like this or not. I don't think you're gonna come away from it loving it. I'd be very surprised if uh, you know, prove me wrong. Someone come at me. Tell me, tell them, tell them, Alma, how for everybody to come at me on the interwebs. Tell me what, you know, how if this movie was better than Alma said, because this time I think it was Alma that said it was a shitty movie. Did I not hear you say that, Alma? I did not use those words.
SPEAKER_01Well, okay, Alma, where can people find us on the interwebs? Well, if you're looking for us, you can head to our website, thegory detailspodcast.com, over on Instagram, where thegory podcast, on blue sky, where the gory details, and you can visit us on our buymeacoffee.com slash thegory details.
SPEAKER_00And I think that is a wrap for October. How do you feel about the movies that we discuss? We discussed the ring, uh, the sixth cents, poltergeist.
SPEAKER_01I think we got a good variety of ghosts.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Different type of ghostings.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um would you say either any of these? I mean, I don't think any of these are ever any of our top favorites, but do you have a favorite in these that we discussed? Or yeah. I think that definitely. Maybe it's the nostalgia factor, but I don't think so because I don't know, when we were talking about it, we were we were bringing up some things that still hit decades later. And out of these four, we did the poltergeist, Sixth Sense, the ring, Woman in Black. Definitely poltergeist for me too. I think so. I like Sixth Sense, but it's not, I don't know, it's not really um, I don't know, it doesn't stand out as much for me, but definitely the poltergeist. So I agree with you. Alright, that's it. I just wanted to go over the movies real quick before we ended our chat. And until next week, bye. Bye bye.
